sad thing is the schools feel compelled to push sports because if they don't, competing schools will. I've always been averse to college sports after constantly witnessing student athletes who couldn't even speak English at an elementary level. :eusa_eh:
Perot was right when he demanded that Texas school athletes require higher min. GPA's in order for students to be able to play. Seeing that football is a religion :eusa_angel: in Texas, he was decried by the football- worshiping dopes.
The incidents in Penn. bring this dilemma to the forefront. With students falling further & further behind other countries in science & math, sports should be relegated to the area which they belong, 'extracurricular'

Extracurricular activities are activities performed by students that fall outside the realm of the normal curriculum of school or university education.

They need to take the $ out of the equation for starters.

The crowd chanted that they loved Paterno. Some of the students, many of whom came to Penn State because of its storied football program, apparently weren’t sure how to cope with news of the famous coach's firing and the allegations of what happened.
Didn't go there because of their educational program :eusa_eh: :eusa_whistle: :clap2:

Penn State actually has one of the best academic records when it comes to athletes. This is contributing to people's shock over this, as the program is known as squeaky clean when it comes to NCAA rules, and actually trying to eductate the people in thier sports programs.

While a jock/locker room mentality may have contributed to the cover up, college athletics did not cause Sandusky to diddle little kids. Correlating a desire to end college athletics, as currently set up, with this scandal is poor form, in my opinion.

"poor form" to remove $ from college athletics? :eusa_eh: The reason these people were given a pass in the first place is because of the inordinate amt. of $ involved in college sports

Its actually because the people who covered it up cared more about money, power and their reputation. It's not the moneys fault. Plenty of people do the right thing even when money is involved.

Riiight  They didn't weigh the millions of $ that are associated w/ athletics, /ESPECIALLY at Penn, to come to their decision to brush it under the rug :eusa_eh:

I think there was a time when college football was considered a sport but those days are long gone. College football has become a high octaine sports betting multi million dollar business enterprise. The kids who were (allegedly) sexually molested by the Penn State ass't coach for fifteen years or more were just throw-away numbers balanced against the power of big-ten college football elitists. Paterno and the university president should be indicted for their role in sanctioning the sexual assault of children.

11/11/11 not a lucky day for Paterno...

Senators rescind Joe Paterno's nomination for Medal of Freedom
11/11/11 : Just two months ago, Pennsylvania’s two senators wrote to the White House and nominated Joe Paterno for the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the nation’s highest civilian honor. Today, they’re taking it back.
Republican Sen. Pat Toomey and Democratic Sen. Bob Casey announced Thursday — less than 24 hours after the legendary football coach was fired following allegations that an assistant coach sexually abused multiple boys — that they were rescinding their support for Paterno’s nomination. “We hope the proper authorities will move forward with their investigation without delay,” Toomey and Casey said in a joint statement. “Penn State is an important institution in our commonwealth. We should turn our attention to the victims of these atrocious crimes and ensure they get the help they need. Our hearts and prayers go out to them and their families.”

Toomey and Casey — along with Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-Pa.) — sent a letter to President Barack Obama in early September putting forward Paterno’s name for the honor, citing his “substantial contributions to collegiate athletics, higher education and American society.” “Coach Paterno over the years has shown tremendous character and loyalty,” the lawmakers wrote. “Throughout his time at Penn State, he has remained committed to reaching goals without sacrificing the ideals that are central to higher education. His contributions to college athletics and higher education, as well as the content of his character, make Coach Joe Paterno deserving of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

In a statement, Thompson declined to answer whether he would withdraw his support as well, instead saying that “the focus should not be on Joe Paterno’s nomination or politicians trying to distance themselves from him. “It’s about the victims and the future of Penn State,” Thompson said. Thompson and Casey also sponsored resolutions congratulating Paterno when he racked up his 400th career win last year. Paterno, who coached at Penn State for 46 years, still has his share of defenders from the Pennsylvania political world, however. Former Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) — whom Toomey defeated in their 2010 Senate race — tweeted Thursday: “Before you throw somebody away, due process should be done — at least an investigation. Both have failed to do that.”
