Hide a former special ops in every school in America?

Why? Imprison our kids? On the odds that something like this could happen? It could just as easily happen in the school yard, at the theater, the mall, a restaurant.

We as parents want to be able to move heaven and earth to keep our kids safe from the evils and tragedies in this world, but they will not go away and in doing so we actually make their lives miserable, having constant reminders that something bad could happen if they dare step outside the walls of safety that we want to build around them. This is not the answer. The odds are actually in our favor they won't happen.

There really are no answers. Tragedies, evils exist and we can do nothing to prevent them from happening. Can we be aware? Yes. Can we absolutely prevent? No. Are the odds actually in our favor? Yes.

We can't quit living or allowing our kids to live because there are some ills within this life on earth.

Well by that rationale, why have a military? Why have police officers? Why have jails or courts? That's about as stupid a comment as I have seen.

And how is providing our children with security "imprisoning them"?!?! Are the Obama children "imprisoned" because they have a Secret Service detail? Fuck, I'd give ANYTHING to have a couple of armed security personnel escorting my children 24x7....

seriously? What age are you? Did you go to school before there were security officers in schools? Before silverware was replaced with plastic? Before recess was removed due to the risk of injury on a play ground or the thoughts a mad man could actually find you on one? Before they became a compound surrounded by fences? Did you survive? I know I did, as well as millions of children survived. And we had better overall health when we were younger as well as interaction with others learning to get along with others while in a state of play at recess.

The President's children are at much higher risk than yours and mine, unless you happen to be a big wig. And even then I can't recall many kids that have been taken out throughout our history.

I hope you reread that very last statement you wrote here. I really do. I hope that you see the insanity of it. You want to surround your children with fortress like security to keep them safe from life. How is that any way for a child to live? And I have 2 children and now a grandchild. I hope each and every day they remain safe. Even though we want answers, sometimes there are none. Some things in life can't be explained that happen. Such as my niece's child that lived for just a few hours after birth.

Or more than one.

No one would know who they were or how many were there, but they'd be there. And they'd be ready to spring into instant action as soon as a shooting started, drastically limiting loss of life. They could be planted in the schools as teachers, janitors, or any ordinary school related job

Only problem is there are prolly a lot more schools than former special ops.
Good idea.

Probably? There are DEFINITELY a lot more schools than former special forces operators. The other issue is that they are very expensive. Their unique skill sets and experience make them six-figure contractors around the world. Not many schools can compete with that.

However, for once you're starting to think rationally. Instead of banning guns (which won't solve anything as murder is banned and that's still happening), we need well trained, well armed security in each and every school. At least two. And while that won't prevent 100% of incidents, it will take a tragedy of 20 and turn it into a tragedy of 1 or maybe a tragedy of just injuries and no loss of life.

I would classify the crazy mass shooters into two categories

a) the sophisticated
b) the unsophisticated.

In the a) case these shooters do have access to black market items, and the argument that laws will not stop them holds more water. In the b) case that argument fails because the unsophisticated mass shooters do not have access to black market weapons. They are limited by what is legally available

In this case of the Connecticut shooter - had the AR-15 not been illegal, he would not have been carrying it. Had the legal magazine capacity been less than 30 rounds, he would not have had 30 round magazines. It should be obvious that in the case of the unsophisticated shooter especially, a break in the shooting due to reloading is an opportunity for both armed and unarmed bystanders alike to intervene, as well as an opportunity for victims to escape.

It would be easier and cheaper just to train some admins and staff. Most prob own firearms anyway.

Oops idea is better.

Problem; Where should he keep his gun? Will he be allowed to wear it? If he has to run somewhere to get it because everyone is offended by it most of the damage will already be done. A pistol is a nice secondary weapon but you need a sniper rifle. One shot, one kill. It's still a hairy proposition.

Nope, armed well trained guards works better.

Then you have to worry about bombs.

At my high school, which was a nice affluent suburb of Chicago, we had an armed police officer around at all times. He was in uniform and had his pistol on his hip.

He was a cool guy, got along with the students really well.

Tennessee Considers Training And Arming Schoolteachers To Protect Against Shootings - Yahoo! News

A member of the Republican-controlled legislature plans during its upcoming session to introduce a bill that would allow the state to pay for secretly armed teachers in classrooms so, the sponsor told TPM, potential shooters don't know who has a gun and who doesn't.
