Hey everyone! I can't wait to get into this board. It has been a while since I spent time on a message board so I am looking forward to chatting with all of you. I am a poli sci major in college headed towards my junior year. See you all on the boards!

Oh good.

Presumably your poli-sci major means you understand the meaning of socialism.

This will make some of us quite happy, I suspect.

If not, capitalist markets' reliance on economic planning (read: rightist definition of socialism) should still make for an amusing insight to feed to the rightists.

One would suspect, by your comment, that you were trying to say that he/she should be thoroughly studying economic systems as well as political systems.

More often than not, the "divergence" between economic and political systems is more arbitrary than anything else. But since the realm of acceptable political ideology limits democracy to the "political" realm rather than the "economic" realm, we see how such a crude distinction can often serve those in power.

Does 'Expired' mean ripe?

Does 'Expired' mean old geezer?

Does 'Expired' just plain mean dead?

Whichever... you'll have sympathizing company here!

Exactly.

Why?

Because far too often people think anything which the government does that they do not approve of is , by their distorted ignorant definition of the world, socialism.

By their definition, and by that I mean by applying the same logic they must be using when they call things they object to that our governments do "socialism", the existence of a military must mean that the USA has been a socialist nation since 1789.

One cannot study political science without understanding how certain governmental systems must control aspects some or ALL of their economic systems, too.

It is virtually impossible to have a viable complex nation without some control over things economic.

But that control and regulation is not necessarily socialism any more than the existence of stop signs on our roads is an example of FASCISM.

With the red-highlighted I would agree for obvious reasons. We have a Treasury Dept. for that very purpose. Great job, BTW.

The blue-highlighted, however, may be how it's done, but instructing that some or ALL of the economic systems must be controlled is ridiculous. Were it not for the relatively recently revealed behavior of individuals, such as those involved in the Wall St. debacle, there would be no discussion about government control at all. It's purpose is oversight, at which it failed miserably.
