Americans are not moochers - CNN.com

Americans are not a nation of moochers and helpless dependents. Those who are not paying federal income tax would gladly do so, because it would mean they have a decent-paying job.GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is right that 47% of Americans don't pay federal income tax. But he is wrong to suggest almost half of Americans pay no tax at all and feel entitled to live off government handouts.

Romney said: "There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47% who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. But that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. ... These are people who pay no income tax."

It's true that some Americans don't pay federal income tax. But virtually all Americans pay some form of tax, whether it's sales, payroll, state income, or property tax.

Rick McGaheyOver 60% of those who don't pay income tax are working; they pay payroll tax, which goes to support Social Security and Medicare. Another 22% of those who don't pay income tax are the elderly; most of them don't work.

In fact, only about 8% of Americans pay neither federal income tax nor payroll tax, because they are unemployed, are students, or are disabled.

And isn't it just a damned shame that under the Obama policies those people can't get jobs? When you demonize business the way that Obama has and make the business climate so uncertain as with ObamaTax, it shouldn't come as a surprise that so many have to be dependent on government. We need Romney so that we can get the jobs engine moving again.

Now, of course that's not what Romney said or what he meant in his commentary, but liberals LIE. That's what they do. Putting that sad truth aside for a moment, the problem that you're going to have, obviously, is that we pretty much all know somebody who IS a "moocher". You're going to be fairly hard-pressed to get Americans to play their tiny violins when most can name names on people who are scamming the system and don't DESERVE any help. We can readily distinguish between those in true need and those who are simply lazy, drug-addled, and willfully stupid.

What's more, even if you could somehow sell this bag 'o crap to the American people, you're in the sad position of trying to DEFEND an economy which has impoverished 47% of the population. That's Obamanomics for ya. He OWNS this shitty mess. Romney would rather see people employed and able to buy food for their own families. Obama is airing ads encouraging people to get on food stamps. People DON'T WANT your crappy crumbs. They want upward economic mobility.

Just so it's clear to you lefty idiots, when someone refers to people who don't pay income tax they're referring to income tax. I know it's a tough concept to grasp but work on it a little and the old light bulb just might go on.

It's a great spin attempt to point out folks pay sales tax, payroll tax, etc., but people with brains know we all have to pay those taxes on top of our federal income taxes, which ultimately provide the revenue for the government freebies.

In that instance its just a case of what pocket the money comes out of. It is still a tax burden you must pay

The effective total tax rate on many of that 47% is still higher than the paltry 13% Romney pays

So Mitt and his family don't pay any sales taxes,or property taxes,or fees of any kind??

So to follow the board sheep where is the link proving your little claim?

As I pointed out, offshoring of jobs hit it's peak between 2003-2008, wages have been flat for three decades but let's not even bring up the job creators or those who determine wages.
"W" had Capital Gains taxes reduced and the result was the offshoring of jobs by the job creators. Now, how is this Obama's fault, or for that matter George W Bush's fault?

Lifeline is a government sponsored program, but who is paying for it. (WE ARE!!!)Some people claim that the government is using taxpayer’s money (THEY ARE, TRY NOT PAYING THE TAX AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS) to run this program, however, the claim is false. Universal Service Fund (USF) which is administers by Federal Communication Commission along the Universal Service Administration Company (USAC), pays for the Lifeline phone assistance program.

The Universal Service Fund (USF) was created back in 1997 by Federal Communication Commission in order to achieve the goals set by the Congress under the Telecommunication Act of 1996. According to the Act, telecommunication service providers are obliged to contribute a portion of their interstate and international telecommunications revenues... Some of the paying customers might find a line item named ‘Universal Service’ on their telephone bills. These companies include paging service providers, wireless telephone companies, wire-line telephone companies, and Voice over Internet Protocol service providers." (Last time I checked money collected and given to the government was called TAXES).

"During the Bush administration, there was the introduction of a project that gave subsidies to those who could not afford a phone...

Oh, it is a BUSH phone and not an Obama phone...

We don't know what Romney really said because the tape was edited.

Of course we do. Do you know how we logical know that he said EXACTLTY what is on the tape? Because he has been on the stump ever since trying to "explain" what he said, and in fact, driving his points home.

Obamaphones started in 2008. And the FCC ORDERED the fee - which is just the same as a tax.

More fail. LOL

Again... for the umpteen billionth time

The only time an adult US citizen should be paying zero in income tax is when that person earns zero in income... every citizen, every dollar, treated the same should be the goal

And if you are taking more back in refunds than you were putting in in the first place, you are dependent and being supported

Actually, he has been explaining what he said at that donor meeting....we do not know if he said it the way the edited tape showed he said it.

And the truth is, the following is correct...

47% do not pay federal income taxes
46% are on some governemnt assistance of some kind
47%+ are definitely going to vote for Obama

Now....the tape implies that Romney said all three groups were made up of exactly the same people.

If he did, then he was wrong.

However, since the tape is admittedly missing some parts to it....we do not know what he said and whether or not he differentiated between the three groups.

Do you realize our Federal spending is 100X more redistributive than it was in JFK's day?

Has the 'non-rich' taxation kept pace with that consumption?

No one wants to honestly address the "wages flat" situation.

How about we address it this way.....

In 1980 u paid a receptionist $10 an hour to answer phones, take messages, meet visitors and handle all incoming mail.

Now we have direct line voice mail and most cnon voice communication is email (not USPS).

So now the recptionist simply greets visitors.

What is he or she doing that warrants more than $10 an hour?

Wages arent flat due to anything more than technological advances...and as time goes on the need for human labor will decrease even more.
