Of course it can. You are assuming that being social is a simple condition and that all social organizations are equally beneficial.

View the video, mere ants are powerfully dominant as a species based purely upon absurd physical capacities and simplistic but tremendously powerful organizational capacities.

Humans appear to benefit from what is by far the most success/survival/dominance oriented instinctive protocol of all species.
