Health insurance companies across the country are seeking and winning double-digit increases in premiums for some customers, even though one of the biggest objectives of the Obama administration’s health care law was to stem the rapid rise in insurance costs for consumers.

Dave Jones, the California insurance commissioner, said some insurance companies could raise rates as much as they did before the law was enacted.
Particularly vulnerable to the high rates are small businesses and people who do not have employer-provided insurance and must buy it on their own.

In California, Aetna is proposing rate increases of as much as 22 percent, Anthem Blue Cross 26 percent and Blue Shield of California 20 percent for some of those policy holders, according to the insurers’ filings with the state for 2013. These rate requests are all the more striking after a 39 percent rise sought by Anthem Blue Cross in 2010 helped give impetus to the law, known as the Affordable Care Act, which was passed the same year and will not be fully in effect until 2014.

In other states, like Florida and Ohio, insurers have been able to raise rates by at least 20 percent for some policy holders. The rate increases can amount to several hundred dollars a month.

wtf?

I have posted here several times THESE FACTS from the people that figure out the premiums, i.e. ACTUARIES!!!

A nationwide study conducted by Milliman Inc. for the Society of Actuaries found that nationwide the premiums in the individual market would increase from 8 to 37 percent in 2014
with a cumulative increase of as much as 122 percent between 2013 and 2017!!!

Take the time like I did download from the Society of Actuaries SOA - Society of Actuaries - Design and Implementation Considerations of ACA Risk Mitigation Programs
FACTS are that insurance companies SPEND on average 80% of the Premiums on CLAIMS already so when government puts the ACA mandated 85% figure..
WHAT the F...k do yo expect????

AGAIN Government "good intentions " create UNINTENDED Consequences...

PLEASE if you want to know WHY health care costs and claims have skyrocketed three WORDS!!

EMTALA and "Defensive Medicine"!
EMTALA please look up this 1986 Federal legislation and it's "good intentions"
$750 BILLION a year according to the experts, i.e. Doctors! Spent because they FEAR getting SUED!!
FACTS!!! as to why premiums continue to climb IN spite of ACA!!!

fill us in.

ill go look it up but bring some info to the table for discussion
It's no coincedence that allowing major healthcare corporations to merge and monopolize the market, thereby reducing competition, which resulted in prices going up. In some ways, the healthcare lobby is more powerful than the gun lobby.

This was the GOAL of this administration all along

if the people were too stupid to see that, they deserve what they get, unfortunately they are taking the rest of us down with them

Critics, like Dave Jones, the California insurance commissioner and one of two health plan regulators in that state, said that without a federal provision giving all regulators the ability to deny excessive rate increases, some insurance companies can raise rates as much as they did before the law was enacted.

“This is business as usual,” Mr. Jones said. “It’s a huge loophole in the Affordable Care Act,” he said.

While Mr. Jones has not yet weighed in on the insurers’ most recent requests, he is pushing for a state law that will give him that authority. Without legislative action, the state can only question the basis for the high rates, sometimes resulting in the insurer withdrawing or modifying the proposed rate increase.

They have a state legislature, they have over $3 million in federal dollars through the ACA to improve their state rate review laws. And their insurance commissioner still wants the feds to step in and define the scope of his powers on behalf of Californians. Somewhere in here there's a lesson about what states are and are not (not) capable of doing.
There you have it....Declare the states incapable and/or intransigent and have the feds take over the whole system.

But they're not socializing medical care....Newp!

I don't understand why folks will pay the higher rates.

Drop your carrier through your employer and pay the "non tax" tax. I'm serious.

Or just put the fuckin' "public option" back into the bill, then just sit back and let the mechanics of capitalism do its thing.

Rates will go down and you won't have to pay the additional tax.

That was the point all along, once again, for those with half of a brain...socialized medical care.

Really...is it all that hard to see for so many? Was it ever hard to see when Obamacare first was discussed?
