Health care learning from other sectors

What is other industry sectors doing to improve and retain their workforce compared to the health care industry? Some are deploying innovative management techniques, operational practices and newly developed technologies that are envious of their competitors. What are innovative management techniques? Innovative management techniques are new methods developed to help organize, lead, motivate and retain a workforce, large or small.

Identified industries

Two industries that have deployed innovative management techniques, operational practices and technology to improve their workforce are Amazon and General Electric. Amazon has over 70 warehouses and 90,000 full-time employees in thirteen countries. The average pay for their employees is 30% higher than employees who are employed at other retail stores. Employees use cutting-edge technology and robotics to assist with their daily work flow and help fulfill thousands of customer’s orders per day. General Electric created an industrial research laboratory which helped create a central location for scientific discoveries that could be easily managed compared to scattered laboratories. Many other companies have created similar models that have proven to be successful, for example Apple. Apple has a very elaborate headquarters in California, called Apple Park. It is one of the largest business structures, housing 12,000 employees, covering 175 acres, with all the latest innovations to help inspire employees for generations to come. According to Eisner, S. (2016), “Though leaders of innovation travel different paths and are not all alike, though some are mavericks and others break through existing challenges, though some are founders and others are successors, though some are college educated and others are not, these “Imagineers” share ten signature traits” (para. 1). Innovation, new operational practices, and technologies are all important factors to creating and keeping a “healthy” workforce which in turn creates and establishes a great business.

Best practices used to improve workforce

Best practices identified that could be implemented to improve the workforce in nursing homes, specifically certified nursing assistants (CNA) and licensed practical nurses (LPN) are increased use of innovative technologies to assist with providing quality patient care. For example, specific EMR applications to assist with proper patient charting, and robotic pill dispensers to decrease medication error. Nursing homes tend to get a “bad rep” for care provided to the elderly. Many times funding is an issue, or the clinical staff is stretched thin. Many clinical assistants and nurses seemed to be stretched thin and underpaid which lead to decreased quality care. It is important for managers to have emotional intelligence in this kind of working environment, develop practices to offer nurses and nursing assistance time to decompress from daily work stressors.
