Durbin: Romney needs to release tax returns - CBS News

(CBS News) On "Face the Nation," Senator Richard Durbin, D-Ill., challenged the presumptive Republican nominee for president to be more transparent with his finances, including releasing more years of his tax returns.

"Mitt Romney has failed to make an economic disclosure that every president and candidate for president has made in the last 36 years. It goes back to his father, who disclosed 12 years of tax returns - he disclosed one," Durbin said.

Durbin, the number two Democrat in the Senate, also referenced a new article in Vanity Fair that provided insight into Romney's offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Switzerland - countries popular among the wealthy for secrecy and tax protections.

The Senator suggested that Romney's offshore accounts reflected either duplicity or a lack or faith in the U.S. dollar: "You either get a Swiss bank account to conceal what you are doing, or you believe the Swiss franc is stronger than the American dollar," he said.

George Romney, Mitt’s father and a onetime Michigan governor, released 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in the 1960s. President Obama has also released tax returns dating back to 2000.

So - if we are SO insistent on transparency from Obama, why not expect the same from Romney.

Just as soon as Obama releases his college record. By the way has Romney violated the law?

Romney did release his Tax returns in January, what more do people want? Account numbers? Even in the partisan article it clearly states that Durbin wants "more years of his Tax returns"... Now apply that same request to Obama... And then you will see that your request for transparency, however sly... seems pretty damn hypocritical.

Because Obama’s democrat.

But you knew that already.

If Romney released 12 years of tax records you would then want 13 if he released 13 you would be asking for14 the truth is he could never release enough to satisfy the left.

I completely agree with Durbin and I'm sure the Obama camp has this one waiting in the arsenal to dump on Willard during the debates.

It's going to pin Willard in the corner perfectly that if he refuses to show them, will come off as a tax dodging POS that has something to hide.

If he does release them, it will show how much Willard has been hiding his assets overseas and other tricks to dodge taxes, showing he pays likely less than most wage earners.

Either way it's a win-win for Obama

If he already released his Tax returns in January, how exactly is it a win-win for Obama? You don't see the intent of the article is to make people believe Romney never released his returns, Durbin is merely asking for more years of returns... Something which would never be asked of Oblamo. YOU are the exact numbskull the article is pandering to... The ones who wrongfully believe Romney never released his returns. Unlike all the people Obama nominated and they had to decline Romney paid his taxes.

Oh yeah I had forget about Treasury Secretary Tim I forgot to pay my taxes Geithner among other's.

Romney’s Father Released 12 Years Of Tax Returns; Revealed That He ‘Seldom’ Used Tax Loopholes | The Second Alarm

The New York Times has a swell editorial this morning reminding the public that George Romney, father of Mitt Romney, led the way in transparency in 1968 by offering not one but twelve years of tax returns.

I looked back at the news coverage in 1968, and it’s quite interesting. When he was first asked for his tax returns, George Romney balked. He explained that just “one year could be a fluke, perhaps done for show.” But he eventually relented. According to this write up by Drew Pearson, the returns showed that George Romney donated 19 percent of his income to church, 4 percent directly to charity, and most surprisingly, the returns showed that the Michigan governor “seldom took advantage of tax loopholes to escape his tax obligations.”

Yeah, because college grades are every bit as important as the fact that Romney has all manner of offshore accounts, and he is the first candidate in the history of America to be pulling this shit.

obama hasn't released his tax returns back to 1970.

This is a manufactured issue that means nothing.

If there are any suspected irregularities in Romney's tax returns for the years 1970 to present, then it's up to the IRS to make them public.

This is the equivalent of putting hacked e-mails from Sarah Palin's account on line and asking for the public's help in looking for dirt.

Obama released 12 years, George Romney released 12 years - Mittens should release 12 years.

Transparency, remember? You don't think this is more important than Obama's grades? Really??!

Willard refused to release his tax returns, then finally did so months later after getting tons of heat from both sides of the isle and everywhere in between.
Many feel what took so long was Willard likely shifting around and hiding more assets to show he has less than he actually does have, and pays more than he normally would have otherwise.

By releasing his past tax returns, there is nothing he can hide and the truth can come out about Willard that he is nothing more than a pompous ass, tax dodging, elitist 1% that only cares about himself and his other corporatist hacks.

Though again, it's all about transparency, transparency, transparency, remember? What would he have to hide?

Right after Obama releases the rest of his material.

Until then fuck off.

Do you really think that no president before has ever had an off shore account? Do you think that the Kennedy's never had an offshore bank account? How about Candidate John Kerry? How many years of tax returns did he release? How about those off shore accounts?

This has as much meaning as demanding that Romney post nude pictures of himself on line so we could examine his body for hidden tattoos or skin cancers. Maybe his wife is lying about her health. Post her medical records on line so we can check it out for ourselves.

But, more importantly, how much did obama's drug addiction cost, where did he get the money to pay the dealer and who was that dealer anyway? How do we know that obama's drug dealer hasn't ended up with a fat political appointment someplace if we don't know who it was?

I seem to remember college grades were quite important when Kerry ran against Bush and the mantra was that Kerry was more qualified because he got better grades at Yale.

and he is the first candidate in the history of America to be pulling this shit.

What shit? Has he done something illegal?
