Have scientists finally found the 'gay gene'? Major new study of 800 brothers backs claims sexuality is in our genes

  • A large study of gay brothers has reignited the debate over whether a 'gay gene' exists - and adds to evidence that genes influence men's chances of being homosexual.

Some scientists believe several genes might affect sexual orientation.

Researchers who led the new study of nearly 800 gay brothers say their results bolster previous evidence pointing to genes on the X chromosome.

Julio Cabrera poses in a local park in Chicago. Cabrera and his brother Mauricio, of Fort Worth, Texas, are among almost 800 gay brothers nationwide who donated blood or saliva to help scientists search for genetic clues about the origins of homosexuality. Both are convinced their sexual orientation is as deeply rooted as their Mexican heritage.

    WHAT THEY FOUND
The researchers say they found potential links to male homosexuality in a portion of chromosome X and on chromosome 8, based on an analysis of genetic material in blood or saliva samples from participants.

Chromosome X is one of two human sex chromosomes; the other is chromosome Y, present only in men.

The study authors note that animal research suggests a gene located in one region of chromosome X may contribute to some sexual behavior; it's one of the same regions cited in the new study.

They also found evidence of influence from a gene or genes on a different chromosome.

But the study doesn't identify which of hundreds of genes located in either place might be involved.

Smaller studies seeking genetic links to homosexuality have had mixed results.

The new evidence 'is not proof but it's a pretty good indication' that genes on the two chromosomes have some influence over sexual orientation, said Dr. Alan Sanders, the lead author.

Genetic or choice - anything between consenting adults that harms no one else is no one's business but theirs.

So, if they identify the genes responsible, how far behind could be the gene therapy to correct the error?

Will liberals abort fetuses that carry the gay genes?
On the other and, it suggests that,
1. Your gawds are incompetent 'designers", or,
2. The gawds have played a cruel joke on you.

A large study of brothers found that they have genetic similarities. wow.

It's good though that they found Gene. He's that gay guy with Alzheimer that's been lost for weeks.

So, if they identify the genes responsible, how far behind could be the gene therapy to correct the error?

And if religious fanatics have their way, how far are we from mandatory gene therapy for gays (or else)? By the way, what makes you think it is an error?

Some of the most ardent opponents to gene manipulation are the religious fanatics.

Really, how far are we away from a completely utilitarian society where genes are selected in children before birth? For that matter, why suffer through the pangs of pregnancy and the dangers of live birth? ObamaCare won't cover that, because in the future it's regarded as too risky. Just throw a few things into a test tube, shake well, and sprout the kid in a petri dish. Of course, the good genes are copyrighted by Corporation X, so you'll have to pay a premium for those.

There's nothing in that article that says there's a Gay Gene.

The new evidence 'is not proof but it's a pretty good indication' that genes on the two chromosomes have some influence over sexual orientation, said Dr. Alan Sanders, the lead author.
I've got a "pretty good indication" that Homosexuality is a Birth Defect.

The human genome is one synergistic whole. I don't know if you can isolate one gene that turns a guy into a homo or a hetero.

During caveman times when the human species was struggling to survive, I'm betting that there weren't a lot of queers. No cavewoman wanted to give birth to a son only to have him grow up to be a wanker and marry a dude. Today, there are 7 billion people on Earth. Human reproduction is no longer crucial to our survival. That's part of what's going on here, and why there's all this gayness. We live in a very prosperous society. 'Decadent', that's a good word.

Do prisoners have the gay gene? No, they're just faced with the choice of being celibate or turning gay.

Some women can't attract a good guy. Some guys can't relate to women. Some people have an identity crisis, and they find a sense of belonging in the gay community. Whatever.

But RWs will screech that they want smaller government and fewer regulations.

RWs lie.

They want more and more laws and the more invasive the better.

Yeah, both parties want more laws that are invasive.

A libertarian doesn't care if gay people get married. Throw a party, invite your gay friends, say some vows, have a gay wedding and Bang!, you're married. I don't even see why the government needs to be a part of the marriage process, gay or straight.

So, would you support gene therapy that eliminates the "gay gene", should there actually be one and we could fix it?

Of course not.

Why "fix" something that isn't broken?

Edited to add - If it were possible for a gay adult to choose to be straight, they should be able to do that. But of course, I doubt that's ever going to ever be possible.
