No, a crime is a crime and should be punished accordingly. The punishment should not be different simply because of who the victim is.

IMHO, every crime that fits the criteria of a hate crime is already against the law and there are already punishments for that crime, so to declare a crime something different because of the reason it supposedly was committed makes no sense at all.

ow many times can you hang someone for the crime of first degree or should we just cut off his hands first?

How is it different to beat someone half to death, calling them a dirty rat bastard, sonofabitch etc. than to call them a n****r

meh. Chris gets a woody over gun control and global warming. Haven't seen him get all hot and bothered about hate crimes. But then again I've learned to scroll past most of what he posts.

'Hate crime' is nothing more than absurd social engineering... it serves no purpose beyond thought control and will be rinsed in the customary 'unintended consequences' common to all leftist policy.

The purpose of criminal law is to stop or at least reduce the chances of harm to the populus. If everyone observed the criminal law we'd all be able to live unmolested. That isn't going to happen. We're all potential victims but some of us are more likely to be victims than others. Given that then it's sensible to try to increase the deterrent effect where that likelihood of victimisation is increased.

So mugging a woman should carry a greater penalty than mugging a man? :eusa_eh:

If there's a greater likelihood of a crime being committed because someone is female rather than male, yes, the purpose is to create a greater deterrent effect where there's greater likelihood of victimisation.

In my jurisdiction there's a heavier sentence for someone who assaults a family member (regardless of sex or age) simply because within families where there's someone with a propensity for violence there's more likelihood of one of those family members being victimised, therefore there's a greater deterrent effect put in place.
