ALBANY -- Hate crimes across New York state jumped 14 percent in 2009, led by an increase in attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions, state records released yesterday show.
There were 683 hate crimes reported to police authorities across the state in 2009 compared with 599 in 2008, according to a report released by the state Division of Criminal Justice Services.
Anti-Semitic incidents, which made up 37 percent of the reported hate crimes, were up 15 percent in one year, from 219 in 2008 to 251 in 2009.
The report found anti-black crimes, 21 percent of the total, were down slightly from 147 in 2008 to 144 in 2009. Anti-white hate crimes increased from 21 to 29.
Anti-gay hate crimes were up sharply, with those targeting male homosexuals jumping 32 percent, from 62 to 82, and those aimed at lesbians up by more than 200 percent, from eight to 25.
Crimes motivated by anti-Muslim sentiment rose from eight to 11.

The important thing is that hate crimes are being prosecuted. We need more prosecution of hate crimes in order to stamp them out.

A number of Al Azhar ulema expressed their opposition to building a mosque near [where] the events of September 11 [occurred], convinced that it is a conspiracy to confirm a clear connection between the strikes of September [11] and Islam. Dr. Abd al-Muti Bayumi, a member of the Islamic Research Academy [of Al Azhar] told Al Masry Al Youm that he rejects the building of any mosque in this area [Ground Zero], because the devious mentality desires to connect these events [of 9/11] with Islam, though he maintains that Islam is innocent of this accusation. Instead, it is a Zionist conspiracy, which many are making use of to harm the religion.
Katie Couric, in her CBSNews.com review of 2010, highlighted the controversy surrounding the Park51 project. The bigotry expressed against Muslims in this country has been one of the most disturbing stories to surface, she told her panel. In that media narrative, she saw a seething hatred many people feel for all Muslims, which she theorized could be remedied by another, more lighthearted narrative: Maybe we need a Muslim version of The Cosby Show.

I do try to make the distinction between real conservartives by bracketing conservatives in single quote marks (see my post above).
Real conservatives are not racist or hate and fear mongers. Today's 'conservatives' are like the radical chic of the late 1960's, desperate for attention and a feeling of belonging. They are callous and cruel and never question the RW dogma and propaganda which pollutes the airways and which defines their ideology for them.
They're easy to spot. They never submit a thougtful post, rather they quote others at length or post one sentence idiotgrams - see any of Revere's posts or those of Stepanie, CrusaderFrank or Willow Tree for examples.

The report said that out of about 4,000 victims of racial bias, seven in 10 were victims because of prejudice against blacks. Out of nearly 1,600 victims of antireligious bias, about the same proportion - seven of 10 - stemmed from prejudice against Jews.
In a separate study, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported Monday that homosexuals were far more likely to be victims of violent hate crime than any other group.
It said it based its conclusion on 14 years of FBI data covering 1995-2008. It said people perceived to be gay were more than twice as likely to be attacked in a violent hate crime as Jews or blacks, and more than four times as likely as Muslims.

No. If someone pushes me over and steals my pockebook, that isn't a hate crime.
If someone beats me black and blue because i am walking into a synagogue, that is a hat crime. See the difference.
We prosecute crimes differently all the time... based on who the victim is. And, frankly, I've never understood how some think that if you beat someone because they're gay or black or jewish or muslim that that's just the same as if you beat up someone who hit on your girlfriend at a bar.
I'll also point out that there aren't generally packs of people beating up guys in bars for hitting on their girlfriends. There are, however, groups that do go out to victimize others because of their own insane hatred.
