Has this happened in your area?? Awesome!

What a charming way to give something back to those who probably need it.

Seriously, I'm impressed that people are doing this.

God bless those folks. (apparently he already has, though, right?)

One time my son saw a woman and four children on a bus stop bench not dressed for the winter months as it was. Two of the children were sleeping! He stopped and took them to McDonalds, gave her $100.00 and took them to a church that had a homeless shelter.

It was a nice lesson for his children. All three were in the car.

All three are as sweet as pie! Tonight, I went to the band Christmas party to hear my grandson of 11 play the trumpet. As I sat there, the tears came down, thinking how he's growing so fast and how proud I was. The 9 year old, saw the tears, held my hand and said, "That's alright, grandma. You can cry all you want. I'll hold your hand." I am so blessed.

Yesterday, someone went to Walmart in Grand Rapids, Mi, and paid off $500 worth of layaways for people they didn't even know. AND bought a bunch of toys to donate.

Today, someone went to Walmart in Grand Rapids, and paid off about $2000 worth of layaways for people they didn't even know.

There are still some good people out there! Has anyone else heard of this happening where you live?

No. We don't have layaways. Responsible people will take the item home and pay the vendor on Saturday afternoons after receiving their weekly pay.
murkins are incapable of this.......especially those who attend the church of Walmart.

I live in the GR area too. Missed the report though. Curious which WalMart...28th St.?

Without wanting to distract from the OP, but still following its vein, we had a now-departed user on here called Goldcatt who once told us of a recurring act of benevolence that echoes your OP, Caroljo.

She lived in a remote area beyond the reach of the fuel grid. Upon telling us, she said that for the last few years an anonymous benefactor had been paying for the locals who lived below the poverty line to have their external fuel hopper/tank filled-up before Christmas. So far they haven't identified this mysterious colleague of Sant Claus.

They've been reporting these alot on Chanel 8 news....they didn't say which stores though, i don't think. And there were reports of more of this happening in the area this morning! It's happening at some K-marts too...someone did this ($5000) at the one in Hastings. Gosh i wish i'd laid away stuff! Lol! Wonder how many people have run out and laid stuff away just in case! :)

No. I haven't heard of anything like that happening but someone went over to my neighbors farm next door and broke into his feed shed and gave his chickens enough food to last them for 3 days. I guess that was a random act of kindness, well, sort of...

someone went over to my neighbors house and left his four rottweilers enough food to last them three days he plans on dumping the bones

Wow, our news was a little off, today now they're stating that they were K-mart stores, not walmart. The first was a K-Mart on Plainfield. They say this is still happening in alot of areas.

Quite philanthropic.
'Tis the season.

Not heard of that happening around here.

Last night, I did see a story on the local news about an older couple whose house burnt down and they were staying at the Super 8 Motel. They had the room paid up to this weekend and that was it. The lady is on a medical pump with a terminal ailment.

I called the hotel and put an extra night's stay on my credit card.
Every little bit helps.

That was such a good thing to do...that one day could make a big difference for them! I wish i had the money to do these things. Maybe someday :)

You don't have to have money - the biggest toothless smile I ever received was on a cold Pacific Northwest winter day when I took off a pair of nice, but not expensive, gloves and handed them to a guy who looked like he could use them.

My hands were fine in my pockets until I got back to my closet.

Sometimes, all you have to do is give away something you already have two of.

I remember using layaway way back when I wasn't making much money. I found clothes on sale and I couldn't afford to buy them right then so I put them on layaway and paid them off by the end of the month. I don't understand how anyone can condemn someone who puts things on layaway. It's not like they're charing something they can't afford, or stealing it...they are simply laying it away and paying for it as they can. Guess you'd rather I didn't have that business suit to start my new job in.....Good gravy, what the heck is wrong with this world?

I LOVE secret santa! Of which is all this is..... Doing something nice for someone else that you don't know. Who ever thought of paying for the layaways had a great idea!

One of the things i like to do is to pay the bridge toll of the person behind me.

Interesting.

Is this something new or has it been done before the wealth disparity issue arose?

:eusa_eh:

Wealth disparity issue?

Are you implying the disparity between the poor and the wealthy is a new thing?

Or are you pretending that people in "olden times" never did anything for their fellow man?
I was born during the emergence of the American Middle Class and recovery from the Great Depression. Never since that time has there been the level of wealth disparity in America as exists today. And never since that time has there been such widespread and broadly expressed consciousness of it.

So I'm wondering if the anonymous lay-away contributions are a perennial thing or if it might be responsive to the publicity given to increasing awareness of wealth disparity.

Mike,
This isn't new; in one form or another, it's been going on for much longer than either of us can remember. There's a long American tradition of neighbor helping neighbor (at least, out here in flyover country there is). Some people give a little, some a lot, without calling attention to themselves. Some do it because they don't want or need the publicity; others for as simple a reason as not wanting the recipient(s) of their charity to feel indebted to them.

As for people who have some degree of wealth, they aren't all "selfish bastards"; in fact, most I know aren't-they'd just rather do their own charitable work, instead of letting government do it for them.

You'd probably be surprised, if you knew what I've been doing for the last week; after all, I'm such a "mean-spirited conservative SOB". Let's just say some people in need are going to be enjoying a merry Christmas.

Hurray ! More money for China !!!
Fucking idiots.

No, you're the idiot. What's wrong with you anyway? So what if at Christmas, when many people can't afford alot, they try to buy what they can with what they have....and if it means they have to buy something made in China then that's what they have to do! Not everyone can afford "American made". It would be great if they could...but in the meantime, their kids will be happy and that's all that counts at Christmas!

This thread was meant to talk about the good things people do for others, especially at this time of year. Why don't you go find somewhere else to voice your opinions? You must lead a miserable life.....

Something some people started doing around here (i think it was started somewhere else though) is when people go through Mcdonalds, Burger King, wherever...they would pay for the people in line behind them. Then when those people drove up to pay, it was all taken care of!

Secret Santa is a neat thing to do all year long. We've paid for someone's meals at restaurants at times...

We're supposed to WANT to give to others, without thought of being paid back, or announcing to others what we did for someone. God knows and He's the only one that counts. We don't give just to get a pat on the back and be noticed. It's more fun to do it in secret!!

This is terrible. It's "socialism" and it's against everything good Republicans believe in. What a shame.

Wrong; it's "socialism" when you want government to do it with someone else's money; when you do it with your own money, because it's right, instead of because it buys votes for your party, THAT'S called "charity". It's OK; liberals don't seem to be too familiar with the concept.

Me too want to do such thing but right now I am running short by money but the day will come when I will be going it all the way.
