Has lying become more socially acceptable in the USA?

Moral Relativism opened Pandoras Box, and made every 8th grader a lawyer.

I think moral relativism has always been around. We've had middle ages era Popes with kids!

Society is the same, the news coverage is just more detailed in my opinion.
Moral relativism is summed up best this way:

"Nothing is more important than my own ego. What I want and who I am is always good. To prevent the contradictions or consequences caused by doing something I know is objectively/absolutely wrong, I will rationalize them to protect me from facing their true nature."

This has always been around. No society ever survives when it becomes the basic philosophy. That is also a historical truth. For when all is exceptions and excuses for every action, you have anarchy and chaos, not society and order.

I suppose that now we have a child of welfare as President, the basic philosophies and historical truths are a bit off kilter and not what they seemed.

Perhaps we'll evolve beyond accepting this:

"How does one know a politician is lying? His lips are moving."

But lying ain't new, and isn't any barometer of society.

Definitely not. Character and morality protect society from collapse and conquest because it is a measure of clear vision.

It would seem so......

Aren't you the clown who got upset with the 31% of the GOP thinking BHO is a Muslim, then you pull the non sequitur above.

Yes I believe lying is more socially acceptable in today's society. Just like divorce, pornography, name calling, cussing and many more sociological sins of the past have become acceptable. In our society we endure lies by the politicians, media and everyday people we meet. People make up stories about their lives to appear more impressive or to cover up things. This creates an atmosphere of mistrust.

Lying is a matter of trust. In a civilization or even a tribal situation you need take peoples words as the truth to be able to interact. Can I trust what this person is saying or not. Lying violates the basic trust between people. When you tell a stranger a lie you think you won’t see them again and forget it but it corrupts your soul a little bit every time you lie, even a little white lie because deep down inside of you, you know it is wrong. That is if you have a conscience.

When you lie to family and friends then the lie must be remembered because you need to protect that lie forever or they will find you out. Then you will lose their trust in what you say. So you will be always hiding this lie from the people you love and like and it will weigh you down. The more lies you tell the more it weighs you down and builds a wall between you and them. And society today is teaching our kids it is ok to lie.

I abhor lies. They destroy life and imprison your soul.

John 8:32 “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Something else to consider on lying. ZZZZ just reminded me of that with this:

Lying is a matter of trust. In a civilization or even a tribal situation you need take peoples words as the truth to be able to interact. Can I trust what this person is saying or not.

Couldn't find the words before. Another factor in why lying seems to be less harmful and therefore more acceptable is the separation of us from severe consequences of lies afforded us by modern technology.

The less technology and 'creature comforts' that technology brings, the harder it is to survive. Mistakes or disasters are more severe because if they are severe enough, there is a real chance of death from starvation, illness, exposure to the elements or something else. People believed in honor and a certain sense of fair play even though they were enemies because they had to rely on one another to survive. The technological safety net did not exist.

Today, we don't have to worry as much about lying because we are so far removed from the fatal consequence of being ostracized from society or even the need of people who know you to survive. You have anonymity to protect you, and if things DO become too hard for you in a place, you can leave easily and restart elsewhere so easily. Depending on how big and how malicious a liar you are, you potentially go your entire life without facing any consequences for your actions.

Truly a hidden curse of technology

Please elaborate. I don't believe I got upset at all.

Kat, that's 'speaks in libberish'. Hence why I have him on ignore.

Little Fizzle is a hoot. He can't argue so he hides. I have explained clearly what I meant. Asterism's little hissy above clearly reveals he has trouble being put on the spot.
