The only purpose of a corporation is to make money on behalf of its shareholders, by all legal means possible. It has no obligation to do more than follow the laws of the jurisidiction where it does business. A corporation has no moral or social obligations, only the obligation to make money on behalf of its shareholders. This has been the avowed platform of the Republican Party since time immemorial, and this view has been reinforced by generations of SC rulings which have favoured shareholders' rights over those of employees, or the jurisdictions where the companies are doing business.

Either you are in favour of a "free market", or you're not. Right wingers are in favour of corporate freedoms when it comes to glad handing out "tax incentives", but in a true "free market", companies can do as they please, without restriction or regulation. So which is it? Do you really want "free market economics" or not?

From a business perspective, a company MUST adapt to the political reality where you wish to do business. American agriculture rails against restrictions on selling their "frankenfood" GMO in Europe, and their anti-biotic and growth hormone enhanced dairy products in Canada, but why should we be forced to accept products we would never allow our own farmers to produce. It wasn't me who said corporations were "innocent". In fact, today I would agree that most act utterly selfishly and with a great deal of contempt for consumers.

We live in a world of profit above all else and it's very destructive. I don't have the answer. No one seems to. I know that Socialism and Communism are not the answer because I believe in individual liberty. But even that is losing it's shine today as so many abuse their freedom.

That said, when corporations act against their own country for a long enough time, they damage it....to the point they damage themselves. We clearly see that in losses in intellectual property, military secrets and jobs lost to China. But if profit centers can be found elsewhere do they care? But that was my point in the OP. Too many HAVE sold out to foreign interests. ie, China.
