Prime minister will travel to China next month to discuss oil, gas, minerals.

Canada is now looking to Asian countries to market its abundance of oil, natural gas and minerals as plans to build the proposed Keystone XL pipeline have stalled with the U.S. administration.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will travel to China next month to discuss selling Canada's bounty to the rapidly growing nation.

The preferred initial plan was to build the $7 billion Keystone pipeline to deliver Alberta's oilsands crude to refineries in Texas on the Gulf of Mexico.

Harper reasoned that the U.S. government would prefer to deal with a friendly neighbor to help meet its energy needs while creating thousands of jobs.

With widespread opposition by U.S. environmentalists, the Obama administration has delayed its decision on whether to approve the project proposed by energy giant TransCanada Pipelines.

The new plan would market to China and Asian countries through the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline that would transport Alberta's oil and natural gas to British Columbia for shipment by tankers.

Indeed, the final environmental impact statement (EIS) issued by the State Department, which worked in conjunction with multiple federal agencies and leading environmental consultants over a two and a half year period, concluded that Keystone XL will be the safest pipeline ever constructed in the United States. The project must comply with more than fifty special requirements, rules, and regulations designed to ensure the project will be safer than the 175,000 miles of oil and gas pipelines that currently criss-cross the entire United States, including portions of the Ogallala Aquifer.

Keystone XL opponents also argue that development of Canada’s oil sands will increase air pollution and intensify “climate disruption,” but blocking the pipeline won’t stop development of the oil sands, as Canada’s Prime Minister has made abundantly clear. Instead, it will only guarantee that the United States misses out on enormous economic benefits. Moreover, a study from Barr Engineering shows that not building Keystone XL would actually be worse for the environment, as it would create the need for more ocean tankers (pipelines are a much safer method of transporting oil than tankers) and, in turn, increase global greenhouse gas emissions

I'm still at a loss as to why Obama authorized, and the State Department sanctioned, the Alberta Clipper pipeline in 2009. It was billed as a job creator and a safe reliable source of oil.

What is this idiot doing in the White House anyway?

Because Obama had just been elected. It is now a election year, he has to suck up to the environmental whackos :cuckoo:

China to push 'win-win' energy pact with Canada on Harper visit, envoy says

The Canadian Press

OTTAWA — China wants a energy partnership with Canada that would not only set an example for the world, but satisfy its demand for resources.

That's what China's ambassador to Canada, Zhang Junsai, tells The Canadian Press as Prime Minister Stephen Harper prepares for his return trip to the Asian economic giant in two weeks.

Zhang says China is undergoing rapid industrialization and urbanization and its demand for energy and resources is simply huge.

Meanwhile, Canada is rich in energy and resources and has a stable political situation and favourable conditions for investment, he says.

Harper has made it clear that he views China and its Asian neighbours as important new markets for Alberta's oilsands crude following the Obama administration's recent decision to turn down the $7-billion Keystone XL pipeline project.

Harper is to make his second trip to China Feb. 6-12

Here's a thought. make that pipeline go EAST to supply Canada for it's own needs. Do you realise how dependent Canada is on international oil? How many tankers could you eliminate crossing the ocean? Wanna be enviro conscious? Send it east. Bulid a damned refinery.

Send it East to Detroit we'll take it

Here you will find information about a Marathon Petroleum Company LP refinery project that will create jobs and produce a more stable supply of petroleum products for Michigan motorists.

The Detroit Heavy Oil Upgrade Project (Detroit HOUP) will add new equipment at Marathon's Detroit refinery – Michigan's only refinery – to process additional heavy crude oils, such as those from Canada. This project will increase the refinery's capacity from approximately 106,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 120,000 bpd, adding more than 400,000 gallons per day of clean transportation fuel to the marketplace.

Construction on the Detroit HOUP began June 20, 2008 and completion is expected in late 2012.

Marathon is committed to openly communicating with neighbors and concerned governmental jurisdictions to keep them informed as the project moves forward.

After US Oil Snub, Canada Focuses on China

Published: Monday, 6 Feb 2012

Canada will focus on exporting oil and other goods to China and other booming Asian economies even if Washington overturns its decision to block a pipeline that would have sent more Canadian crude to the United States.

Speaking ahead of Canada's most high-powered trade mission to Beijing for almost 15 years, Prime Minister Stephen Harper told Reuters that Canada must focus on markets that are growing, regardless of the fate of the Keystone XL pipeline, which is proposed to carry crude from the Alberta oil sands to Texas refineries.

The U.S. State Department blocked Keystone last month, saying the didn't have time for a thorough environmental review.

"I think we need to be clear. As much as I want to see that Keystone project proceed, I think this incident ... underscore(s) the fact that it is in this country's national interest to be able to sell products beyond the United States," Harper told Reuters in an interview.

"And I don't think a reversal of an American decision can change that fundamental reality. So I think it is absolutely essential that we find ways of being able to sell our products to the biggest growing markets in the world, and those are in Asia."

Canada — the largest supplier of energy to the United States — was profoundly disappointed by Washington's decision to veto TransCanada's [TRP 42.05 0.09 (+0.21%) ] Keystone project. The United States — which is by far Canada's largest trading partner — is unlikely to look at it again until next year.

At 170 billion barrels, Canada's oil sands are the third-largest crude deposit in the world, and Canadian exports to bigger markets will be a focal point of Harper's meetings in China, where he will be accompanied by five cabinet ministers and the heads of major corporations seeking business.

China has already made clear it would like to import Canadian oil to help power its rapidly expanding economy.

China does not currently import Canadian crude. Enbridge [ENB 39.24 0.26 (+0.67%) ] wants to build a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific but it could take years to approve and complete the project.

China's international oil firms, taking a more long-term view, have spent or pledged to invest more than C$11 billion ($11.1 billion) in Canada's energy patch since 2005
