Abraham Lincoln in 1861 said I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.
Most people believe the war was about slavery, but the real reason was Lincoln did not want a secession of states under his watch, so there was a creation of the pretence that slavery was the issue, and not the right to secede from the union.
So on the 4th of July, I will fire up my grill and although I am not a big fan of Jefferson, I will toast him for his words.
To clarify this to the people. the civil war was about the right to secession and not about slavery.
