Maddow Pulls Ahead to #1, CNN Sees Gains After Midterms

The untold story is that her new ratings are being fueled by a lot of people on the right just checking out what the Left is talking about. A week from now report back to tell us that she and CNN are right back in the ratings cellar where they've always been. Only the dullest amongst us and the frontally-lobotomized like Lakota can stand to watch that channel for more than a few seconds . . .

. . . much less ENJOY it.

Once AGAIN --- broadcast ratings have nothing to do with "enjoyment" or "approval" of anything. They're in no way related. If they were, fake wrestling and onstage paternity tests and news reports of a deadly fire in another part of town you never heard of, would not exist. Y'all have to grok the difference between attention and assent. The latter is in no way required to generate the former.

If you're going down the highway and suddenly come upon a jackknifed tractor trailer marked "Nuclear Waste" consumed in flames, that will get your attention. That doesn't mean you "enjoy" or "approve of" it. But it does get your attention.

Broadcast ratings measure attention. That's IT. That's all they can measure. How anyone "feels" about the content of whatever has their attention is in no way measured by ratings.

So once again, broadcast ratings are of import to two types of people: those who are interested in buying commercial time, and those who are interested in selling it to them. Because the ratings just told both of them how much that time is worth, i.e. how many eyeballs will see that commercial message. It told them nothing about anybody's 'feelings' about what got them there. It can't do that.
