Hamas on Sunday said it would not back a UN membership bid, and warned that no Palestinian leader had a mandate to sacrifice fundamental Palestinian rights.

Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya, speaking in Gaza, said the group also continued to support the establishment of a Palestinian state on any part of "historical Palestine" but would not seek to disrupt the UN bid.

His comments came as Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas heads to New York to submit a formal bid for UN membership for a Palestinian state on the lines that existed before the 1967 Six Day War.

Speaking to a meeting of the Palestinian legislative council, Haniya warned that Palestinian rights must be protected.

"There is no mandate for any Palestinian leadership to infringe on Palestinian national rights, nor is there a mandate for any Palestinian actor to make historic concessions on Palestinian land or the right of the Palestinians, foremost among them the right of return," he warned.

"Given this position, we reiterate our rejection of this bid," he added.

Hamas Bans Gaza Students Studying Abroad:clap2:

Gaza's militant Hamas rulers have banned eight teenage students with scholarships to study in the U.S. from leaving the territory, a Palestinian rights group said Wednesday.

The move appeared to be part of an intensified Hamas campaign against independent groups that they view as a challenge to their rule and against activities that believe promote a Western lifestyle.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights said the eight students were granted AMIDEAST scholarships, a program that educates talented teenagers from the Middle East and North Africa for a year in the U.S. At the end of the year, students return to their home countries to finish their education. The students were granted scholarships based on their academic achievements.

In a statement, the rights group said Hamas' education minister rejected a travel request by the teenager's parents for "social and cultural reasons." It also accused Hamas of breaching the parents' right to educate their children as they choose.

Hamas would not confirm the order, much as it has in the past with similar orders travel bans on Gaza residents.

But the parents of 15-year-old Aboud Alshatari said their son was traveling to the border Wednesday when Hamas police turned him away, saying the Education Ministry refused to let him leave Gaza. Alshatari was slated to attend school in North Carolina.

The ban comes a day after a network of aid groups in Gaza criticized Hamas for forcing aid workers and employees of civil society groups to register with them before traveling for work outside the Gaza Strip. And last week, Hamas shut down the U.S.-financed International Medical Corps after it refused to submit to a Hamas audit.

The Iranian-backed Hamas overran Gaza from the secular Palestinian Fatah party in bloody street battles in 2007. Since then, Hamas has slowly imposed its radical interpretation of Islam on residents of the Gaza Strip — a world view that is even more stern than what traditionally religious conservative Gazan's follow.

Other Hamas crackdowns include trying to ban male barbers from cutting women's hair and forbidding women from smoking in public and outlawing scantly clad female mannequins.

The PFLP and Islamic Jihad have also come out with opposition to this bid.

What will happen if the UN accepts Palestine on terms that most Palestinians disagree with? It would be non binding on the Palestinians as Abbas does not have the authority to make that bid.

Why would so-called Palestinians, who are Arabs and mostly Muslims, identify by a Hebrew-based term? I guess they don't teach Hebrew, or history, in Pallie schools  http://www.usmessageboard.com/4154063-post1.html

Interesting, Tinny.

And strangely proximal to the electoral win by Bob Turner over a Liberal Democrat in a largely Jewish district...

Could it be that the Obama administration has warned it will not support the bid?
A bit of face-saving in advance?

Wadda ya' think?

New York Jews rebuke Obama's anti-Israel policies

...at least some Jews to send a message to Obama.

On Tuesday, New York City's heavily Jewish and reliably Democratic 9th congressional district went for Republican Bob Turner in the special election to replace disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner. Turner won by eight points in a district where Democrats have a 3-to-1 voting edge and Obama secured 55 percent of the vote in 2008. Silent Cal was in the White House the last time a Republican carried the district.

Since Jews have lived in and ruled in Israel for 3000 years, why don't Hamas and the other jihadists just move back to Arabia where they came from? All desert, lots of room :clap2:

I studied the Koran a great deal. I came away from that study with the conviction there have been few religions in the world as deadly to men as that of Muhammad. So far as I can see, it is the principal cause of the decadence so visible today in the Muslim world and, though less absurd than the polytheism of old, its social and political tendencies are in my opinion to be feared, and I therefore regard it as a form of decadence rather than a form of progress in relation to paganism itself.

No, they just don't like Abbas's proposal. What the US thinks does not matter to them.

What kind of answer do you expect? They don't like the proposal. The position of the US is irrelevant.

GAZA, (PIC)-- Gaza-based Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haneyya has slammed the Palestinian Authority’s bid for membership in the United Nations, calling the move “political adventurism”.

He said that the PA’s UN bid “moved in the opposite direction” of the Arab Spring, adding that anyone who “acts frivolously with the Palestinians’ rights” is not warranted to speak on their behalf.

“We support establishing a state on part of the Palestinian territory that the Palestinians agree to, without recognizing the Zionist entity or conceding an inch of land,” Haneyya said during a session of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza on Sunday.

Critics of the UN bid, due to become reality next week, say recognizing an Israeli state on 1967 borders would relinquish the rights of the Palestinian refugees expelled from those territories.

“We are facing a situation that doesn’t withstand political adventurism and requires awareness and not following the policies of the former regimes,” Haneyya said.

The Palestinian premier instead called for consulting with the Palestinians to agree on a national strategy in addressing the Israeli occupation.

Prime Minister Haneyya further criticized the UN bid saying that it was in contravention of the Palestinian reconciliation deal signed earlier in May.

“Reconciliation and exclusivity in decisions are two parallel lines that do not meet,” Haneyya said.

Haneyya also considered the move a “lifeline” for Israel and America after the Arab Spring.

“We should have waited for the Arab revolution and invested in popular Arab movements in a way that strengthens and protects Palestinian position and rights,” he said.

However, Haneyya assured that statehood was in fact an objective of the Palestinians, and said “we will not stand as a stumbling block to the establishment of a fully sovereign state without making concessions”.

Professor of political sciences at Al-Najah University Abdul-Sattar criticized Abbas’s statehood bid in a separate statement describing it as a “waste of time and energy”.

“I think there is no need at all for the Palestinian Authority's plan to go to the United Nations,” Qassem said.

“If Abbas was interested in bringing the United Nations to Palestinian issues, he could ask it to implement previous resolutions,” he said.
