Ahmed Ja’abri, commander of Hamas' armed wing, Izaddin al-Kassam, recently sent an urgent letter to Hamas leader in Damascus Khaled Masha’al, warning that the situation in the Gaza Strip was “deteriorating,” and that Hamas has started losing control over the territory, London-based Arab-language newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Saturday morning.

The letter was reportedly written in light of a series of assassinations and explosions near the offices of senior Izaddin a-Kassam commanders and of Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

According to the report, Ja’abri wrote Mahsa’al that “several worrisome explosions recently occurred in Gaza, security anarchy is extensive, and al-Kassam men are being killed.”

Ja’abri also reportedly admits that Hamas has made a number of serious mistakes in ruling the strip.

The paper quoted Palestinian sources as saying that Hamas operatives who oppose Haniyeh were behind the attacks. Others suggested that the explosions were carried out by fundamentalist Islamic jihad groups.
?Hamas losing control over Strip?

Contrary to popular propaganda the Hamas leadership in the Palestinian government is quite moderate. It is that government that is keeping Israel from constant rocket attack. If they lose control to the extremists it can do no one any good.

How would you even know, Forum Dunce?

Does the imposition of Sharia law and forbidding women from laughing in public constitute moderation?

Keep trying to tear down Hamas and Israel will have extremist at the door.

Israel has had extremists "at the door" ever since its founding, and regardless of what they call themselves or how they seek to justify their actions, they all have one paramount goal in common, the conquest of the Jewish state of Israel by one means or another. With Hezbollah and Syria aiming thousands of missiles at Tel Aviv and Iran readying long range missiles and seeking to arm them with nuclear warheads, it matters little to Israel in terms of its security whether Hamas or some other gang(s) are ruling the turf in Gaza.

In fact, if Hamas is overthrown by gangs of other extremists, it means Iran and Syria will have less direct control over events there, which is a plus for Israel, and if anarchy takes over Gaza and rocket attacks resume, Israel will have more than adequate justification for another military intervention, and this time it could be justified by humanitarian as well as security concerns.

After such an intervention, in the same way that Israel is cooperating with Jordan and the US to help the Abbas government to build stable, effective government institutions in the West Bank, perhaps Israel, Egypt and the US can cooperate to do the same in Gaza. Certainly Egypt would be glad to get this Hamas offshoot of its own Muslim Brotherhood away from its door.

The more one thinks about it, the clearer it becomes that the downfall of Hamas in Gaza would not only benefit Israel but also Egypt, the Arabs living in Gaza and the PA and contribute to stabilizing the ME and advance the prospects for a wider peace.
