Few things get the Web's conspiracy theorists hopping more than Halliburton, the oil services and military logistics provider that boasted current Vice President Dick Cheney as its CEO from 1995-2000. So when the company announced on Sunday that it was moving its corporate headquarters to Dubai, the rumors started flying instantly.

Dubai has no extradition treaty with the U.S., one blogger wrote, so Halliburton's top execs will be safe should the company be found guilty of any crime.

It's all about the taxes and Dubai's business-friendly regulations. Some companies move to the Caymans, but Halliburton's going to Dubai-land!

The Democrats have taken over Congress, and Halliburton wants to get as far away as possible from Henry Waxman.

Far be it from me to rain on anyone's anti-Halliburton parade, but the company will continue to be legally registered in the U.S., so the move is not quite the equivalent of a corporate relocation to the Bahamas. This could also be a case where the explanation being proffered might actually be the true one. Halliburton is desperately trying to unload its military logistics and contracting subsidiary, KBR, and wants to focus on oil field services. And the action is mostly in the Middle East.

My own preference would be to luxuriate in the irony that a company that (at least until it gets rid of KBR) epitomizes the United States military-industrial complex better than just about anybody is proving itself to be just as rootlessly globalist as any outsourcing or offshoring specialist. But that's a cheap thrill. As How the World Works waits to see how big this story gets, I'll content myself with the fabulous explanation offered by a Texas congressman quoted in the Houston Chronicle, whose coverage of this story puts to shame the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal (and whose reporter, Brett Clanton, makes an explicit connection between the news and last year's political uproar about a Dubai company purchasing the right to operate six American ports).

Rep. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, said the news "is not surprising."

"It would make sense," Brady said, for an oil and gas company to "go where oil and gas is," Brady said. "America these days essentially vilifies our own energy companies."

It's our fault! We didn't love Halliburton enough! Now the jilted company is seeking a warmer embrace from the friendly folks in Dubai.

Who's next?

This is much ado about nothing.

Any professionally managed multi-national company already has an international corporate structure designed to keep profits from foreign earnings from being double-taxed in the U.S. Halliburton's U.S. operations will continue in a business as usual form - paying taxes along the way.

I was just going to post on this. Granted, the oil is in the east, but most of the contracts are from the US. Considering what they are looking at doing with KRB, one must wonder if down the line they plan on incorporating in Dubai, leaving KBR as the US actor.

In another thread, CSM pointed out why Halliburton wins all those contracts, which I'm sure is true. Looking back at the Dubai ports scandal, it seems we should turn this stuff back to the military, with the money going to Halliburton, being redirected back to an increased military budget.

libs have beat this company with everything but the holy grail. Now, they are angry cause Halliburton said we are outta here? I wonder how many U.S. jobs this will cost and lost tax revenue

Libs are more upset over the lost revenue then the lost jobs

Yep...just wait until WalMart moves their HQ outside the borders....the libs/dems (lems?) will will be spewing venom like crazy; lost jobs, lost revenues, lost who knows what else...alll because WalMart moved and not because the lems make it impossible for them to operate.

Not to mention how the unions would shit their pants. All the money they would NOT be able to steal from their members pay and then turn over to the Dems in the form of bribes, eh, sorry, political contributions

Libs and unions threaten oil companies, Hillary says she want to take the oil companies porfits, they smear Haliburton, they show their contempt for Wal Mart - and libs think they should sit back, say nothing, and take it?

Your analogy goes nowhere for nobody. Are you just jackassing or ass-jacking?

Halliburton is for themselves and to hell with me and you. Are you joking or are you just that ignorant?

What company would not leave the US after being savaged by the Dems for years, and now that they are in power, they increase the threats?

Right now we have oil prices going up and Exxon releases a list of their upcoming exploration projects and guess what? Only a dew are within the US. All the oil exploration is happening outside the US

Drug companies is another industry under attack from the Dems and liberal media

Drug Companies Get No Credit Even for 'Lifesaver' Drug
Posted by Julia A. Seymour on March 14, 2007 - 17:26.
"A new drug that proved to be so effective so quickly, the approval process was sped up," lauded CBS "Evening News" anchor Katie Couric on March 13.

Couric and other reporters had reason to praise the newly FDA-approved drug Tykerb. The drug is approved for treatment of a specific kind of breast cancer, called HER-2 positive, and is showing tremendous promise.

Cancer patient Marsha Brekke told ABC "World News with Charles Gibson" that the drug was her last chance. Brekke has been cancer free for more than a year.

But what all three networks, ABC, CBS and NBC, left out of the evening newscasts on March 13 was any mention of the company that developed this breakthrough drug.

The company, GlaxoSmithKline, deserved credit for its 16 years of research to develop Tykerb, likely at a very high cost, but wasn't given any by the networks. Unfortunately, this is not unusual. The Business & Media Institute special report: Prescription for Bias states that the pharmaceutical industry is missing from nearly 80 percent of stories about prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
