Hacker Disables Autos: Sci-Fi Reality?

While I do not agree with having any type of control over anything we buy those boxes are only installed on people's cars that purchase them that has a bad credit history. Not every car sold.

Au conrare some cars can be shut down by Onstar now.
Yes that bothers me too since I have onstar!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think that feature is on all models yet.
But there was a news piece about it being done to catch car thieves?
I saw it on the news.

Do you remember several years ago law enforcement was developing an electro-magnetic pulse devise to disable vehicles in car chases, I wonder if that ever had any progress. Supposedly it only worked with fuel injected vehicles, but I would think it would interfere with the points in a carburetor system also.

any EMP strong enough to disable a points type car ignition system would likely kill the driver.

old people talking about hacking and electronics in general is always amusing.

If you say so, BLU,why would you say that without any knowledge of who your responding to anymore than I or anyone else does?

I myself have been into hi tech electronics and still am for over 4 decades. I am currently building another SDR (Software Driven Radio) which functions through a computer with a most sound cards but high end sound cards are preferred. These radios perform better and have less components than conventional systems. They are totally controllable via the PC, they decode digital transmissions (DAB) Digital Audio Broadcasting) along with the ANALOG modes like single sideband,FM,AM. Other digital formats decoded are from the old radio teletype (RTTY), to many other modes that send volumes in a one second data burst, some are encrypted and cannot be read. They are controlled by simple software programs using a USB cable, USB-2 of course, and the images on the monitor are that of a receiver with all the controls on the front panel that you manipulate with a mouse.
I have 6 computers, one as a server for some of my projects and interests and the others for the family to use.

Just the tip of the iceberg to AMUSE YOU, for ONE "Old Person" like me who talks electronics and technology. I find your comment Amusing. :)

Naah just checking to see if you would watch it

When I started out in computer tech. There were no micro processors, and memory was magnetic core ram. And I learned pure machine language first. Assembly language came next, it was much faster to program.
I can build a CPU almost entirely out of quad dual input nand gates.
Know how to build a JK flop out of dual input nand gates?
I was on the internet before it was the internet.

yea I definitely should have said computers instead of electronics. and the two posters quoted are certainly exceptions to my normal experience

No problem Blu,

BTW, I think USMB has more intelligent above average members aware of the political, social and economic issues than many other sites. Some points well taken some cast aside, but a diverse group from A to Z with a lot of humor injected which makes it an interesting place to kick back and get your blood pressure up and pop a vein. :eusa_angel:

To the other poster regarding computers, our small company, many years back, installed one of the first digital radiology special procedures rooms in a New Jersey hospital. In a 4X4' steel cabinet with very large boards, boards that now fit on something the size of a postage stamp and smaller. Using old 600 MB Fujitsu tape drives for backup! Most of the systems later were, and are now all digital and calibrated using laptops and major companies using proprietary programs. Most of the procedures today even basic diagnostic radiology is all digital. Resolution on the Hi-Def monitors are as good or better than the old x-ray film days. Linked with the PACS system they can be stored on CD's are sent over the internet to any location on the planet for further diagnostic impressions from other specialists.

In a continuously more technical world, it's scary how much power tech-people and hackers get. Disabling autos now? Well I guess one could have foreseen it. Doesn't make it any less scary though.

It will not kill my non-computerized diesel trucks. I will own the highways after an EMP attack.
