Breitbart News previously reported that the Umpqua campus is a gun free zone. Former U.S. Marshal Art Roderick suggested the gunman chose the campus for that very reason. He said, “[The gunman] probably knew that the facility was a gun free facility, [which is] an easy target for these kinds of coward individuals. They know they’re not going to get any response unless they happen to run into security or a campus police officer.”

Obama's home state of Illinois has some of the strictest of anti-gun law....

The Oregon shooting was not a "gun free zone" and, in fact, there's no such thing. It was reported yesterday that there was an armed guard on campus but they're now saying there was not. Students at that college are allowed cc guns.

The gun nuts who say more guns will keep us safe never think it through. They've said they want armed teachers, armed students and even want very young students to have access to guns.

Unless the shooter obeys a sign that says: Start shooting here because these people are armed, there's little reason to believe the guns would be in the right place at the right time. More to the point, victims would not, could not react fast enough to stop the shooter. While the teacher or student fumbling to get their own gun out, the shooter has finished his rampage and shot himself.

More guns is the problem - not the answer.

Incorrect...while I might agree that more guns are not the answer, neither is depriving Americans the means to defend themselves in the manner of their choosing...which is an inherent human right that government has no right to infringe.

On November 5, 2014 a campus communique said the Umpqua Community College community was “split 50-50″ on what to do. According to the Associated Press, Olson presumes the October 1 attack will reignite the discussion not only for Umpqua Community College but for community colleges around the country.

The conservative site Breitbart and others assert that guns were banned at UCC. This is not true. The student code of conduct bans guns "without written authorization." Under Oregon law, the university could not ban people with a valid concealed carry license from bringing their weapons on campus. (They could ban gun from various buildings and facilities.) Conservative writer Dana Loesch, who initially claimed the campus was a "gun free zone," updated her article to clarify that individuals with concealed carry permits were allowed to bring guns on campus.

There was, in fact, someone on campus with a concealed carry weapon at the time of the massacre. A local reporter explained to CNN that it was legal for him to have such a weapon on campus.
