Groceries For Guns: Los Angeles Police Department Collects More Than 1,500 Weapons In Annual Buyback

s-GUNS-FOR-GROCERIES-large.jpg

... Police officers filled bins with more than 1,500 rifles and handguns outside the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena and the Van Nuys Masonic Temple, according to the Los Angeles Daily News...

The anonymous buyback program allowed weapons to be turned in with no questions asked. Handguns, rifles and shotguns could be exchanged for $100 Ralphs grocery store gift cards. Assault weapons earned a $200 card.

Gangs love these no questions asked buy backs. That's how they dispose of guns that have their ballistics on file.

dear silly woman they have to hand them back.

the police can then trace the guns if they prove to have been involved in a crime

At least its voluntary.

But you are right that they can be used to "dispose" of guns used in crimes.

They also fly in the face of supposed penalties for owning illegal guns. Why follow the rules when you can just get rid of your gun no questions asked?

Gun buy backs have NO reason to be objectional to the right.

they will rail against them for WHAT reason?

Its an anoynmous gun buyback. Yes, they get the gun, but they can't tie it to the person handing it in legally.

Dumbass.

And they do! That's how they know the guns turned in were involved in crimes. But since the buy back is no questions asked, they don't take the names or addresses of the people who turn them in. Show up, turn in the gun and get your gift card. Those criminals that are wanted just have someone else turn the gun in. Every gun turned in is run through ballistics if only so the police know what to take off the hot list.

No one has objections to gun buy backs. They serve a useful purpose. Gun traced to crime. Gun gets turned in. Now the arms seller on the street corner needs to sell another gun. It's the cycle of commerce. As far as getting guns off the street, they are useless. All the buy back programs that we have had have not really reduced the number of guns on the street. It's not like they turn in the gun and never get another one.

You are, by far, the dumbest person I've ever encountered. Ever.

TM is convinced that people don't need ID to vote, but they will happily produce their identification to turn in a gun on a no questions asked buy back program.

The only thing the police can hope for is that the perp left prints or something like some skin cells or a hair in the weapon that can be traced for an ID. barring that they are out of luck.

Even if they could trace something on the gun itself. There's no way to tell who turned the gun in. It's an anonymous program.

Yes, the chain of custody is broken at that point, but a print would at least give them a lead.

A long shot at best. In the end gun buybacks are feel good hokum.

That's true, the buy back programs are feel good hokum. No one is against them. I've never heard anyone say that there shouldn't be such a program. Just that it doesn't do any good.

Although, I have heard rumors, that most of the guns in the buyback program are sold and back on the streets. The cops gotta make a buck too. I would not accuse a police officer of lifting some of these guns and selling them. Just like I wouldn't accuse a police officer of emptying an evidence locker of a cocaine stash. But it happens.

Of course, the HuffPo link failed to note some of the more amusing comments from those turning in cheap firearms, such as:

"That young guy shot up all the kids and they blamed the mama because the mama had the weapons in the house," Valerie Butler said, in explaining why she was waiting in line two hours in South Los Angeles to get rid of an old handgun.

Yet Butler, 50, said she was not getting rid of both of her guns.

"Just one," she said, and laughed. "There's a bunch of nuts out here, and they're coming in when you're sleeping. You got to protect yourself."

and

"If I could get $100 of free groceries, it's worth it," said Charles Edwards, 60, waiting in line next to his old .22 revolver after driving to Los Angeles from Fontana. "I wouldn't do it for $40. That's why people are here. They feel bad about all that's happening, but times are tough."

He still has a shotgun at home.

What a bullshit example of grand standing by LA's mayor.

Yup. Sound like they are unloading the old unusable guns along with some unloading guns that were used in crime. Hell. I'd give my dads old gun that don't work for $100 dollars worth of groceries. Win, Win for me.

In a few weeks the stats for home burglary and gun store thefts will shoot thru the roof.

As criminals steal guns to turn them in for the quick cash.

That too. Although we have buy back programs all the time and there hasn't been a severe increase in home burglaries just to get guns to trade for a gift card.
