Greenlandā€™s enormous ice sheet is melting at such an accelerated rate that it may have reached a ā€œtipping point,ā€ and could become a major factor in sea-level rise around the world within two decades, scientists said in a study published on Monday.

The Arctic is warming at twice the average rate of the rest of the planet, and the new research adds to the evidence that the ice loss in Greenland, which lies mainly above the Arctic Circle, is speeding up as the warming increases. The authors found that ice loss in 2012, more than 400 billion tons per year, was nearly four times the rate in 2003. After a lull in 2013-14, losses have resumed.

Billions of tons of ice melting per year and accelerating. If you live in Florida or a coastal area I'd be concerned. Very concerned.

Good. Nuke Greenland, for all I care.

Well the tipping point (18%) is perched precariously on top of peak oil. So we must be very, very careful......

Actually if would be GOP strongholds like Louisiana, coastal Mississippi, coastal North Carolina and South Carolina and the biggest loser of them all Florida.

/----/ Here's a question for ya Spanky - How did Greenland get its name?
How did Greenland get its name
At the time that Greenland was discovered, the Earth was a bit warmer and southern Greenland actually had green meadows and could sustain villages of Norse settlers and their cattle, sheep, goats, horses, etc. The name was actually an accurate description of the land at the time.

Since that time the Earth had cooled down some and the ice sheets advanced, forcing the Norse settlers out again.

A similar history befell the early Norse settlers to "Vineland" (North America). When they arrived the weather was warm enough to grow grapes. Ultimately global cooling drove the Norsemen back to Greenland and then Iceland. The colony in Iceland was well established by that time and survived.

Not altogether true:

In Norse legends written in the 12th century and later, it is told that Eric the Red explored the southeast and southwest coasts of Greenland in A.D. 983-986 and gave the country its name because people would be more likely to go there if it had an attractive name.

Early marketing.

I guess "Iceland" didn't work out that well..

Get your facts straight. 80% of Greenland has been covered with ice for the past 400,000 years.

Greenland used to be green

Certain coastal area were and are free of ice but that is it. It has been written that Erik the Red called it Greenland to get other Norse to migrate there. In other words, a public relations ploy.

Don't get carried away. Greenland was warmer and in those days there was no liberal media to whine about global cooling.

No, you wrote, in part, "The name was actually an accurate description of the land at the time". This is wrong. It was never "green". The story of Greenland is one of a publicity stunt. It was the Florida real estate scam of its time.

Yea sure. Actual measurements by satellites have only shown a few millimeters rise in sea levels over the last few decades. And even then they canā€™t be sure because land rising and falling effects readings as well as winds on the ocean surface.

Donā€™t know why you lefties are so concerned about it anyway. The planet has been warming for the last 12,000 years. Our planet is always changing and evolving. There has been periods with zero ice, and life thrived. When the planet does warm up more and more and more ice melts, that means all that northern wasteland will become habitable and will be able to sustain more life.

These news stories are just lame ass attempts by globalist pigs to scare everyone and demand more power be given to them. ā€œWe need carbon taxesā€, ā€œwe need to ban fossil fuelsā€, ā€œwe need to stop eating meatā€....blah blah blah. Same old shit, all just to control us.

Let me see... Greenland was almost totally ice free in our current Holocene interglacial FIVE TIMES PREVIOUSLY according to ice core records..

Do you all ever read and use critical thought before posting obviously wrong fear mongering bull shit?
