The Greenland ice sheet melted at a faster rate this month than at any other time in recorded history, with virtually the entire ice sheet showing signs of thaw.

The rapid melting over just four days was captured by three satellites. It has stunned and alarmed scientists, and deepened fears about the pace and future consequences of climate change.

In a statement posted on Nasa's website on Tuesday, scientists admitted the satellite data was so striking they thought at first there had to be a mistake.

"This was so extraordinary that at first I questioned the result: was this real or was it due to a data error?" Son Nghiem of Nasa's jet propulsion laboratory in Pasadena said in the release.

He consulted with several colleagues, who confirmed his findings. Dorothy Hall, who studies the surface temperature of Greenland at Nasa's space flight centre in Greenbelt, Maryland, confirmed that the area experienced unusually high temperatures in mid-July, and that there was widespread melting over the surface of the ice sheet.

Holy shit, ice melting during the summer. The world is coming to an end.

Holy shit, a really retarded and completely clueless little chickenhawk, too ignorant to know anything about what is being discussed. Rightwingnut political brainwashing as usual.

Uncle Ferd says it's dat global warming phenomena brought on by the UFO's dey found buried inna ice...

Greenland Ice Sheet Undergoes Unusual Melting
July 25, 2012
Data from three satellites show the massive ice sheet covering the Arctic territory of Greenland underwent an unusual melting earlier this month. The U.S. space agency NASA says the data shows 40 percent of the ice sheet, stretching from Greenland's coastal edges to its 3.2-kilometer-thick center, had experienced some thawing by July 8, and accelerated to 97 percent four days later. The ice melt was the largest detected in more than 30 years of satellite observations. A scientist at Dartmouth College says such pronounced melting has not occurred since 1889.

This satellite image from NASA shows the extent of surface melt over Greenland’s ice sheet on July 8, 2012 (left) and July 12, 2012 (right).

NASA says the melting coincided with an unusually strong ridge of warm air, known as a heat dome, that parked itself over the ice sheet on July 11 and remained for about five days. Scientists say they cannot determine whether the recent melting is a natural event or the result of man-made climate change. Last week, a NASA satellite captured images of a huge iceberg measuring twice the size of New York City's Manhattan island breaking off from the Petermann Glacier, one of the largest in Greenland.

So how long have they been recording ice melt over Greenland, 3 years? That's what "recorded history" amounts to in the case of the global warming database. Using the term "all of recorded history" is a con, and you're a con artist.

Wow, this is pretty big.

If Obama or Romney threatens to cut a single red cent from nasa, jpl, Darpa, Nws, Noaa they won't be getting my vote. tired of bs. Obama better effin not touch another cent and romney better be careful. I understand both are close to the same on social issues. I will vote on this issue and the economy.

I was waiting for someone to post this.

Here is what NASA actually said about this ice melt.

Even the area around Summit Station in central Greenland, which at 2 miles above sea level is near the highest point of the ice sheet, showed signs of melting. Such pronounced melting at Summit and across the ice sheet has not occurred since 1889, according to ice cores analyzed by Kaitlin Keegan at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station at Summit confirmed air temperatures hovered above or within a degree of freezing for several hours July 11-12.

"Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," says Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data. "But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome."

Romney. I think he should get us out of the middle east and cut the money that would go to the pointless war. Redirect the money into science and research for a more cutting edge millitary to general science. Saddam Hussein had a big army and that didn't help him because we were far more advance.

Rapid Ice Melt in Greenland Baffles Scientists - WSJ.com

WASHINGTON—Nearly all of Greenland's massive ice sheet suddenly started melting a bit this month, a freak event that surprised scientists.

Even Greenland's coldest and highest place, Summit station, showed melting. Ice core records show that last happened in 1889 and occurs about once every 150 years.

Three satellites show what NASA calls unprecedented melting of the ice sheet that blankets the island, starting on July 8 and lasting four days. Most of the thick ice remains. While some ice usually melts during the summer, what was unusual was that the melting happened in a flash and over a widespread area.

"You literally had this wave of warm air wash over the Greenland ice sheet and melt it," NASA ice scientist Tom Wagner said Tuesday.

The ice melt area went from 40% of the ice sheet to 97% % in four days, according to NASA. Until now, the most extensive melt seen by satellites in the past three decades was about 55%.

Mr. Wagner said researchers don't know how much of Greenland's ice melted, but it seems to be freezing again.

"When we see melt in places that we haven't seen before, at least in a long period, it makes you sit up and ask what's happening?" NASA chief scientist Waleed Abdalati said. It is a big signal, the meaning of which we're going to sort out for years to come."

About the same time, a giant iceberg broke off from the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland. And the National Snow and Ice Data Center on Tuesday announced that the area filled with Arctic sea ice continues near a record low.

Mr. Wagner and other scientists said because this Greenland-wide melting has happened before they can't yet determine if this is a natural rare event or one triggered by man-made global warming. But they do know that the edges of Greenland's ice sheets have already been thinning because of climate change.

Summer in Greenland has been freakishly warm so far. That is because of frequent high pressure systems that have parked over the island, bringing warm clear weather that melts ice and snow, explained University of Georgia climatologist Thomas Mote.

He and others say it is similar to the high pressure systems that have parked over the American Midwest bringing record-breaking warmth and drought.

Ohio State University ice scientist Jason Box, who returned Tuesday from a three-week visit, said he ditched his cold weather gear for the cotton pants that he normally dons in Nevada.

"It was sunny and warm and all the locals were talking about how sunny it was," Mr. Box said after getting off a plane. "Beyond T-shirt weather."

Since solar cycle 24 will have only 90 sunspots, the fewest since the cycle, peaking 1928 had 68 spots, and TSI has been mild, and since the widespread melts should be cooling average temperatures, SOMETHING MUST BE HAPPENING, WITH THAT GREENHOUSE EFFECT!

As in, CO2 should have peaked at 280 ppm, but it is at 400 ppm and shooting, toward at least 1000 ppm, while CH4 is no longer measured, in ppb. HAVE A FUCKING CLUE WHAT COLOR THE HOUSE IS.

Go ahead and give up on the Obamneys. If you don't want to encourage their behavior, I suggest tossing another vote, at the Green Party and Dr.Jill Stein.

I linked to the actual NASA paper that explained that this happens every 150 years or so, and that they saw no reason to assume that this instance was unprecedented. You counter by quoting a reporter who says that NASA says it is unprecedented. Which one do you think is more credible?
