What is a Green River Knife?

National Museum of American History: Green River Knife

-------------------------------

"John Russell founded his Green River Works on March 1, 1834 on the banks of the Green River near Greenfield Massachusetts. The Green River knives he turned out there quickly became a favorite of emigrants, buffalo hunters, Indians, miners and settlers. It is estimated that between 1840 and 1860, 60,000 Green River knives were shipped west."

Those are sweet-looking knives. I've bought stuff from Track of the Wolf, they have a great selection of musket parts.

They are handy in the kitchen to. My brother puts handles on them and gives them out for Christmas. The most handy knife I ever had was the green river (Ontario) knife works paring knife with scales made from an old tire I found on the road. Very grippy stuff. The sheath was red neck kydex in the form of an old radiator fluid jug.

Sweet.

I'd like to try scales made from horse stall mat from Tractor Supply.

Still working on this. Had to enlarge the pin holes to use the mosaic pins I made last year.

If you need to do this, use a carbine tipped drill bit and some drilling oil.

Have this one all fitted...
