ATHENS, Greece -- Greek disability groups expressed anger Monday at a government decision to expand a list of state-recognized disability categories to include pedophiles, exhibitionists and kleptomaniacs.
The National Confederation of Disabled People called the action "incomprehensible," and said pedophiles are now awarded a higher government disability pay than some people who have received organ transplants.
The Labor Ministry said categories added to the expanded list that also includes pyromaniacs, compulsive gamblers, fetishists and sadomasochists were included for purposes of medical assessment and used as a gauge for allocating financial assistance.
But NCDP leader Yiannis Vardakastanis, who is blind, warned the new list could create new difficulties for disabled Greeks who are already facing benefit cuts due to the country's financial crisis.
"What's happened is incomprehensible. I think there is some big mistake. The ministry should have a different policy on disability," Vardakastanis told the Associated Press. "The list contains major changes to disability quotients, which could effectively remove many people from access to benefits."
The new list gives pyromaniacs and pedophiles disability pay up to 35 percent, compared to 80 percent for heart transplant recipients.
"It's really not serious to grant Peeping Toms a 20-30 percent disability rate, and 10 percent to diabetics, who have insulin shots four or five times a day," said Vardakastanis.
Greece has been fighting to avoid bankruptcy since 2009. Public spending on health and welfare programs has been sharply cut under austerity measures imposed as a condition for receiving emergency loans from the International Monetary Fund and other countries using the euro currency.

I honestly have no idea, pedophilia to me is a sick crime that needs to be punished, not rewarded by getting a check in the mail.

I'm certainly not in favor of handing out checks, but pedophilia isn't the same thing as molesting children. It's a sickness, a sad perversion of normal sexuality. Pedophiles who harm children should be locked up, for sure. But helping those who don't indulge their urges to avoid doing so seems like a good thing, eh?

Seriously? How in the world would that happen? That's like saying recognizing pyromania as a mental disability would be one step closer to having it as an accepted alternative lifestyle.
The whole 'disability' thing isn't anything I'd ever promote. I don't think it's up to government to figure out who should get special benefits. But the idea that recognizing pedophilia as a mental disorder (one that can be, if not treated, at least dealt with pro-actively) is a bad thing seems foolish to me. Better to shine a light on it and do something about. Death threats only drive the problem underground and make it more dangerous.

So, the message you prefer is "keep hidden, don't deal with your problems - or even admit them". Surely you can see that's counter-productive.
I think you're getting hung up on the liberal advocacy thing where it's all about political rights and being 'accepted', and I agree we should be wary of that. That was the tactic of many fighting for equal rights for homosexuals. But in that case there are no victims. Pedophiles who act on their impulses are victimizing children, there's no way around that, and I don't see sane people EVER accepting that as an 'alternative lifestyle'. The whole point of recognizing it as a mental illness isn't to make it acceptable to abuse children, it's to recognize it as a real problem and do something about it. The point is to protect children.
I think its a joke how someone caught selling crack can get a 10 year sentence or worse but someone who rapes a child will maybe get a 6 month bid, and probably than it will just get suspended and he will just get probations, to me thats totally fucked and the child molestor is 100 times more dangerous than the crack dealer.

But I think the point of view of those who want to treat it as a mental illness is that not all pedophiles abuse children. If this is true, if pedophilia can be treated or contained (if not cured), then it makes sense to try. I haven't studied the issue, so I don't know what the stats are.
As I said, I agree with the point of the OP to the extent that it's ridiculous, even dangerous, to treat things like pedophilia, kleptomania, or exhibitionism as 'disabilities' that would warrant government benefits. But your opposition seems to be with treating pedophilia as a mental illness and I don't quite get that. Treating it as a mental illness doesn't mean it's okay to abuse children, just as recognizing kleptomania or exhibitionism as mental illnesses mean it's ok to steal things or expose yourself in public.
My problem with it is if we start treating pedophilia as a mental illness it will get to the point where child molestors can say I am sick I can't help it, and get tax payer paid medical treatment instead of being in prison where they belong.
