Diplomacy does perhaps work, but in this case, I'd say there was no diplomacy on the part of the ex-President. The Washington Post reported that "Former president Clinton had traveled to North Korea after receiving explicit assurance that he would be able to depart with the two journalists, according to a source involved in the planning of the trip." So the decision to release them had already been reached and it does not sound as though Bill had much to do with it. All he is doing is acting as an escort in bringing these two "journalists" home.
