SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters Life!) - The Grateful Dead, the San Francisco cult rock band that has played at political events since the 1960s, will reunite on Monday for the first time in four years to rally support for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, a spokesman said on Friday.

Band leader Jerry Garcia died in 1995. Surviving members have played together occasionally since then, most recently in 2004. On Monday, original members Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir will play at a San Francisco theater a day before California's primary.

"They have agreed to reunite for this one-time-only event in order to lend support to Senator Obama leading into the crucial 'Super-Tuesday' series of primaries held on Tuesday, February 5th," the band said in a statement.

The band gained fame with its free-form psychedelic music when the counterculture movement flourished in San Francisco in the 1960s, and they attracted many loyal fans who came to be known as "Deadheads."

Let's all pray that this PR stunt doesn't get Obama enough support to get the nomination.

Well, the Vote For Change tour didn't do much for Kerry. Terrific shows, though.

So I doubt it will make a difference.... unless Garcia came back from the great beyond and personally endorses him. Now THAT would make a difference.

Jillian, if Garcia came back from the dead he would most certainly be puffin on some crazy underworld weed and no one would take him serious.

Good memories. I saw the Dead in 94, on what I believe was their last tour. The contact "high" lasted for days.

Without Jerry, there can be no reunion. That's like saying an appearance by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr is a Beatles reunion. Not really.

I head a rumor that they wanted to get Dylan to front the band for the show. Now that would be pretty cool.

Dylan showed up at a Springsteen show at Shea Stadium when I was there. It took about a minute into his song to figure out what he was actually singing.

So, er... nah. Don't think he'd do a good Friend of the Devil.

If Jerry comes back from the dead I'll be ready to shoot him in the brain before he can bite Phil Lesh.

I was never a huge fan of Dylan. Neither was I a fan of phish but I think getting Trey to lead the dead would have been a killer show of support for Obama.

I knew one of the gals who was injured when the dead came to StL in 95. If you wear the tyedye you know what im talking about.
