Bank Examiners Are Told to Step Up Sanctions on Lenders - WSJ.com

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. government's armies of bank examiners have been ordered to be more aggressive in applying formal sanctions to financial institutions when problems are found.

Top officials at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency held a conference call last month with nearly 1,500 examiners and told them to act "while problems are still manageable and the prospects for rehabilitation or, alternatively, sale or merger of the institution are still good," according to a new report by the Treasury Department's inspector general.
