Gov. Rick Scott and the state's three Cabinet members are appealing a federal judge's ruling that they must overhaul Florida's system for restoring felons' voting rights and come up with a remedy by April 26.

"People elected by Floridians should determine Florida's clemency rules for convicted criminals, not federal judges," Scott spokesman John Tupps said in a statement. "This process has been in place for decades and is outlined in both the U.S. and Florida constitutions."

The state also asked to delay meeting the April 26 deadline, which drew a sharp rebuke from the judge, U.S. District Judge Mark Walker. Last month, he ordered Scott and the Cabinet — Attorney General Pam Bondi, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis — to figure out a more fair way to restore voting rights for most felons who have completed their sentences.

"Rather than comply with the requirements of the United States Constitution, defendants continue to insist they can do whatever they want with hundreds of thousands of Floridians' voting rights and absolutely zero standards," Walker wrote in a six-page decision late Wednesday.

What are the requirements of the U.S. Constitution referenced by the judge? The "right to vote" is not explicitly stated in the U.S. Constitution, but only certain conditions for which it cannot be denied. A felony conviction is not one of them. Ergo, it falls to the state.

This is merely another ploy to jack up the Democrat vote. Scott should include with the appeal an argument that were the state coerced by the court into re-granting voting rights to felons, why could the state not also by rights be coerced into re-granting the felons' rights under the 2nd Amendment?

Then, watch as the shit hits the fan.

Low numbers.

And, actually, they're yours. All that free stuff, remember?

The issue is that it was arbitrary. There is a backlog of over 10,000 petitions. Scott changed it; he is the one (one of four) who decides and he hears less than 100 cases a year.

Ya know, here is the deal. No party owns the people. I cannot stand the Democratic Party but that doesn't make me like the Republican Party.

Indeed. I would end the practice altogether. You lose rights by virtue of your behavior as a matter of course. Tough titty. It's merely a part of the penalty.

Ya know, here is the deal. No party owns the people. I cannot stand the Democratic Party but that doesn't make me like the Republican Party.

I also. I dislike most of the Republican Party leadership. I detest all of the Democratic Party leadership, and their agenda.

My politics is essentially damage control, and has been for nearly a half-century.

I think that ALL rights should be restored upon release.

If they're that dangerous, keep them locked up.

But don't release them and then deny them rights that everyone else has. Or at the very least, after a minimum amount of time after release, they should get full rights back. Automatically. But right now, for NO federal crime, are rights restored.

So someone who runs into a bank, steals money off the counter and runs out, will never be allowed to own a gun again. Even if they were unarmed, even naked, when they stole the money. Why? Because banks are FDIC insured, which means the gov't has their hand in it so its a FEDERAL crime to steal from a bank. And the only way to get gun rights back for a federal crime is a pardon from the president.

I've always said this: If felons can't vote, they shouldn't have to pay taxes as that has long been called the "fee" for the right to vote.

That's right. I mean it's not exactly fair to tell someone they have to pay taxes but have NO say so in their elected officials. Voting is one of the things that soldiers have fought for the right of Americans to do. Heck I think inmates should get to vote. Being convicted of a crime doesn't do away with your right to vote. At least it shouldn't.

I think your right to vote should begin the day you turn 18 and stop when they declare you dead.

Because these "blue states" are "population centers" like Commiefornia and New York. Taxes paid in are directly related to how many people pay them. This idea that blue states are huge population centers is exactly why the way we choose a president should not be based on population. Thank God for the electoral college. Otherwise the west and east coasts would elect the president every time. That's just not the way things roll here in 'murica.

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with them being democrat or republican. A state with 25 million democrats is probably going to pay more taxes to the gov't than a state with 4 million republicans. But saying that mean democrats are better than republicans or using this fact to compare the two is absolutely ridiculous.
