Milk prices are moo-ving way up.

"Prices will be increasing 30 cents a gallon," said Jessica Chittendon, spokeswoman for the state's Department of Agriculture and Markets.
Chittendon said the state is passing on a 13-cent increase imposed by the federal government on the cost farmers can charge processors for raw milk produced from their cows. An increase or a decrease is usually twice the amount of the federal increase at the farm.

"There's less and less milk being produced in the country because there's a lot of small farmers leaving the dairy business," said a local milk distributor who asked that his name not be used. "To keep the small farmers in business, the government raises the price of milk.
"There are very few industries where a farmer is guaranteed a price for the product," he added.
The state's milk price fluctuates from month to month. The price of milk is up 71 cents per gallon since last May, though the cost has fallen by a dime since November.
