Gore Vidal, the novelist, essayist and playwright, will be remembered as much for his outspokenness and scorn for popular culture and politics as for his 60-year writing career.

He died Tuesday at age 86.
His nephew, Burr Steers, said Vidal died at his home in the Hollywood Hills of complications from pneumonia. Vidal had been living alone in the home and had been sick for "quite a while," Steers said.
Vidal, whose best sellers included Myra Breckenridge and Burr, was proud to be a political and literary troublemaker.

Gore liked to push buttons. He made people understand that freedom of speech is just that, a freedom, where you like it or not. Society at that time was very rigid and peer pressure ridden.

He was not a very attractive person (as a persona, not looks) and he took pride in that. He said something like when you got through the ice cold exterior you found him to be ice cold water.

not a very nice man, but neither was William F. B., the right wing Catholic mouthpiece

RIP. He lived a full life.

it was some awesome shit; an expression that would make them both cringe.

that *debate* was what got me interested in politics

who were you root toot tooting for?

vidal, although i was fascinated by buckley's style of speaking.

i was a protohippie at the time

 You look familiar. :eusa_clap:

There was an older guy in Eastie who did wonderful imitations of Bill B. He had it down pat. Very entertaining. I was fascinated with Gore, as he was an adult acting like a rebel
