Voting is a power grab? Does the GOP Want To Self-Destruct?

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that a Democratic bill that would make Election Day a federal holiday is a “power grab,” sparking a fierce backlash online.

...

The far-reaching legislation would also prohibit the purging of voter rolls, require presidential and vice-presidential candidates to release their tax returns, compel states to adopt independent redistricting commissions and create a matching system for small-dollar donations to congressional campaigns, among other changes.

In his Wednesday remarks, as well as in a Washington Post op-ed earlier this month, McConnell mocked the legislation as the “Democrat Politician Protection Act.”

“H.R. 1 would victimize every American taxpayer by pouring their money into expensive new subsidies that don’t even pass the laugh test,” McConnell said on the Senate floor.

His remarks prompted a wave of criticism by Democrats, some of whom argued that McConnell was acknowledging that Republicans want to make it more difficult for Americans to vote.

“Voting is a power grab. By citizens,” Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) shared a link to a story about McConnell’s comments and tweeted, “Why are Republicans always afraid of making it easier for Americans to vote?”

Ezra Levin, a former Capitol Hill staffer who co-founded the Indivisible network of liberal activist groups, accused McConnell of “rehearsing old lines.”

“In 1977, after Watergate and Nixon, Jimmy Carter was inaugurated and proposed expansive reforms to campaign finance and to make it easier to vote,” Levin said on Twitter. “The GOP called it a ‘power grab’ and killed it in the Senate.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...421dd6-24bd-11e9-ad53-824486280311_story.html

Half the people voting shouldn't be permitted. The rest should be tested.

Don’t pretend you are this naive.

Don’t pretend you are this naive.
So you believe making Voting Day a National Holiday is a Democratic Party thing? LOL

Way to lose most independents and others who have a difficult time getting to polls because they have to work

Another day off of "work" for the bureaucracy.
You do know many people have called for Voting Day to be a national holiday?

I used to be against it - I liked making it difficult for people to vote, but I am an individual, not a political party or pol looking to win elections

Now I'm for it, after the abuse of gerrymandering and other oddities in our system.

The Democratic Party is very dishonest and corrupt.
They want to make Voter Fraud Easier.
Democrats have been using Voter Fraud to disenfranchise the voters for decades.
When they proclaim that Democrat Voters do not have IDs, they are big fat liars.
"prohibit the purging of voter rolls" that is a sure sign that the Democrats practice voter fraud.
Blocking Voter ID laws is another indication that Democrats practice voter fraud.
Chuck Schumer is a well known liar and despicable demagogue.

a Democratic bill that would make Election Day a federal holiday

I think that's an awesome idea!!
First, eliminate tax withholding.
All taxes are due by check on April 15th.
The Federal Election Day holiday will be April 16th.

“Why are Republicans always afraid of making it easier for Americans to vote?”

Because they know that a majority of Americans oppose the GOP’s failed, wrongheaded agenda.

And they know that minority voters are likewise appropriately hostile to that failed, wrongheaded agenda.

a Democratic bill that would make Election Day a federal holiday

i predict most Americans would back it

let the people speak

The truth is, this bill is a power grab. It's an attempt to grab power from the wealthy special interests that control the Republican Party and our political system as a whole and give it back to the people. Mitch McConnell will oppose any attempt to make voting easier and more accessible because he knows when more people vote, Republicans lose.

The Democrats care so much for the people that they are no doubt willing to go ahead and vote for them. That way the stoners don’t even have to put down the pipe for a minute.

Killer! Less hassle standing in line and not showing an ID which we can't afford cause we bought weed.

I like how you faked outrage and pretended that it was just about "voting", and then tried to substantiate it with a quote that showed it was far, FAR more than that.

Quick tip: don't cut and paste "proof" of your premise without actually READING it first, fool.

Most of those people are still going to have the same problem, holiday or not, because "federal holiday" doesn't mean anything is closed other than government offices and banks. Duuuuhhhhh.
