Meet the Press Panel Blames Romney Loss on Limbaugh and ‘Loons and Wackos’ of Conservative Base

STEVE SCHMIDT: Conservatism is a serious governing philosophy that has served this country well. But to too many swing voters in the country, when you hear the word conservative now, they think of loons and wackos. We gave up five U.S. Senate seats over the last two election cycles by people who were just out there, completely extreme, manifestly unprepared for the offices that they’re running for. Our elected leaders are scared to death of the conservative entertainment complex, the shrill and divisive voices that are bombastic and broadcasting out into the homes. And this country is rejecting the social extremism of the Republican Party on issue after issue. And if you look at the four states that legalized gay marriage, on a range of issues, our coalition is shrinking and the Republican Party has a lot of soul searching to do if we are going to assemble a majority.

SS seems like a very intelligent, reasonable man. I've seen him on Morning Joe a lot and I like him. If the GOP is smart they will start taking the advice of someone like him instead of Rush Limbaugh.

I agree. For a NaziCon, Steve Schmidt is saner than most. Woody Harrelson did a great job portraying him in Game Change.

They got backed into a corner: the Bush years discredited their economic and foreign policies, but throughout it all their social policies sustained them. But now the ground is shifting rather rapidly below their feet (gays are okay! saying your thoughts about rape and abortion out loud isn't!) and now their odd choice to double down on conservative social policies is backfiring, branding them as loons, as Schmidt rightly points out.

But jettisoning that doesn't leave much left. The party needs to rebuild its entire policy agenda, intellectual brick by intellectual brick. And they don't have a lot of intellectuals left at this point.

Yeah right, constructive advice from the left. They blame a voice on the radio rather than the candidate. No surprises here.

They are toast, all they ever really did was coddle the 1%, after all the political cover they gave them during and after the great recession they are completely tainted with the rot of elitism, no coming back from that.

LOL

The Party of Boss Tweed is claiming they won on ideology

Conservatives should just abandon the Republican party and start something new and clean. The Republican party is dying a slow death due to incompetence, ignorance and just flat out evilness.

Yeah, that's the temptation.

But it's better if we just take it over and kick out the Starkeys

FACT: The GOP has been taken over by whackos!

Rise of the Religious Right in the Republican Party

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But under the name of Liberalism, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without knowing how it happened.” -- Norman Thomas, Socialist Party presidential candidate in 1940, 1944 and 1948.

Yeah, why would you want conservatives who actually are making sense and want to better the party and the country? The way the right wing has been going in this country has been fantastic.
