GOP seeks austerity

Actually, we are seeking spending cuts and tax cuts. Not European Austerity programs that cut spending and raise taxes.

There is a significant difference. Cutting taxes and spending works well.

Not only does single payer welfare care work, its a basic "human right"........lol

I will never understand how anyone can claim that they are entitled to someone else's forced labor on their behalf. I thought we absolished slavery over a century and a half ago but people want to bring it back in other forms.

I answered you asshole, that article was written by a partisan hacks from the heritage foundation.

If you want to use propaganda dont expect anyone to take you seriously

Of course universal health care works. It just doesn't work very well. In Germany the universal health care only covers the most basic of services. Instead of insurance, they have sickness funds that everyone pays into and exist completely independent from the government. Of course, it would have to otherwise government bureaucrats would be making health care decisions. If someone wants more than basic coverage they are able to get private health insurance policies or pay a fee for service.

One of the major differences between Germany's system and ours, or other socialist systems is that Germans have a very strong work ethic. Someone who chooses not to work when they can suffer social consequences.

Does the left argue that France's backlash against austerity measures is a signal for Americans to support lavish wasteful government spending? How absurd.

Let me see if I understand you correctly. You want others to summerize their arguments in their own words and not link to any site you dont like, yet you wont provide the same courtesy to anyone else? You refuse to even make your arguments. We are lucky if the links you provide even have some sort of relevance to the discussion we are having. And you making this demand of others.

Maybe if you start making arguments in your own words, others might do the same. Of course, then you cant go out demanding evidence for those arguments after you've complained about us providing evidence for those arguments. At least if you are going to be an honest person, which you claim you try to be.

Did you ever think that rather than doing the same thing over and over again, you can use your time on this board to improve your abilities to communicate, argue, and make your points? You'd be much more persuasive and you wouldnt get half the crap you get from people if you just put in alittle more effort.

The french should work less, vacation more, and enjoy more state benefits............for prosperity !!!!

Instead of “fiscal stimulus,” Harding cut the government's budget nearly in half between 1920 and 1922. The rest of Harding's approach was equally laissez-faire.

Tax rates were slashed for all income groups. The national debt was reduced by one-third. The Federal Reserve's activity, moreover, was hardly noticeable. As one economic historian puts it, “Despite the severity of the contraction, the Fed did not move to use its powers to turn the money supply around and fight the contraction.”2 By the late summer of 1921, signs of recovery were already visible.

The following year, unemployment was back down to 6.7 percent and was only 2.4 percent by 1923.'

Now you know.

Gee, sounds like Harding was a full blown Libertarian, in the Lew Rockwell school of thought.....

House GOP seeks austerity - TheHill.com

Republicans and Democrats clashed Monday on what is expected to be a chief battleground of the 2012 election — the fiscal plans of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and House Republicans.

A day after voters in France and Greece toppled governments in a European backlash against austerity measures, Republicans moved forward with legislation to replace $78 billion in automatic spending cuts to defense and discretionary domestic spending with a much larger $261 billion cut focused only on domestic spending.

The GOP said its bill highlights the Democrats’ obsessions with raising taxes and inability to accept even reasonable spending cuts to a government that is $16 trillion in debt.

Do you think France and Greece are now going in the correct direction, or doing the right thing?

Stalin's gulags also worked, but I don't think anyone would want to adopt that system of production.

when in history has austerity brought an economy back from world wide recession?

Just curious, TM...

I know you're all revved up about this whole "austerity ruining Europe's economy" thing but I wonder if you could actually name a European country that is spending less than it was before? Since you seem to believe that draconian cuts have already been made...this should be simple for you to do...right?

What's amusing is that people like you are declaring austerity a failed policy before it's ever really been tried. The truth is...spending hasn't been cut in Europe. Taxes are being raised but spending goes on as usual.

What's going to be REALLY amusing is to watch the new President of France raise his tax rates on the wealthy up to 75% and see how tax revenues in that country fall off a cliff as the wealthy move elsewhere. Now THAT will be some funny stuff.
