GOP seeks austerity

Problem is, Europe has not been cutting spending. Mercatus Center Senior Fellow Veronique de Rugy has crunched the numbers and found that among some of Europe’s worst economies (Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Greece, and Italy) government spending cuts have wither been tiny or non-existent. Greece and Spain did cut slightly in 2009 through 2011, but both countries are still spending more today than they were in 2008. Italy did reduce spending in 2009 and 2010, but increased spending in 2011. Meanwhile France and the United Kingdom have yet to cut spending at all.

Veronique adds:

The most important point to keep in mind is that whenever cuts took place, they were always overwhelmed by large counterproductive tax increases. Unfortunately, that point is often overlooked. This approach to austerity — some spending cuts with large tax increases — is what President Obama has called the “balanced approach.”

Funny, Germany is the most successful part of Europe............austerity was their answer. The problem is the people of most of the other countries aren't willing to give up their freebies, the German folks realize the importance of cut backs and less spending during tough times.

Remember the French and Greeks were up in arms because they couldn't retire at 61 and receive unfunded benefits.
I'll be watching and waiting til they bottom out.

They gave a half assed effort at fixing their problems and rioted and acted fools the entire time. Then they go the EXACT opposite way a couple of years in.... screw em!

Now lets watch how bad things get under more socialists.

House GOP seeks austerity - TheHill.com

Republicans and Democrats clashed Monday on what is expected to be a chief battleground of the 2012 election — the fiscal plans of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and House Republicans.

A day after voters in France and Greece toppled governments in a European backlash against austerity measures, Republicans moved forward with legislation to replace $78 billion in automatic spending cuts to defense and discretionary domestic spending with a much larger $261 billion cut focused only on domestic spending.

The GOP said its bill highlights the Democrats’ obsessions with raising taxes and inability to accept even reasonable spending cuts to a government that is $16 trillion in debt.

So "austerity" is a liberal term meaning "spending within your means?"

I think Germany is saying the same thing.........screw em!!

who asked for that as a solution?

The new deal

ROFL! Yeah, it only took 12 years for the New Deal to bring us out of a depression. Is that how long we have to wait for Democrat economic policy to fix this recession?

Oh really how about the swiss?

The Swiss (in the NORTH) are an industrious people who are already balking at supporting the lazy and indolent of the South. Switzerland will not tolerate bankrupt countries putting hands in their treasuries.

China does not need to give us money so we will have the money to buy their shit. They can keep it instead. Borrowing money to buy the products of the lending country does not make economic sense. Not to anyone. Maybe liberals. The reality is, that selling products to people who can't pay for it, and have to take money from the maker in order to buy would end up with it making more economic sense to throw the products in a landfill and keep the money. Fortunately for China they don't have to do that. They can sell to India, Russia, Brazil and any one of the emerging economies and let the deadbeat Americans sink.

Yup. The Canadians caught a clue as well back in the 90's and Canada today is doing great.

To bad the Clowns we elect aren't as savvy as the Govts of Canada and Germany.

Hell. The rest of Europe is going to hell in a handbasket as are we. Its amazing how some folks just don't seem to see it.

The community organizer in chief will NOT get crushed in november..........sadly

He will retain his welfare dependent cabal of clueless state workers, marxist unions, stoned adolescents, homosexuals and the ghetto vote.....................

Thank goodness for the GOP.

The Depression of 1920-21, for example.

Depression of 1920

it was NOT world wide and it was a post war drop.

that is why it was so short lived

The differences in the economy of the 1920's to now are too great to make meaningful analogies of this sort.

Besides, we've had over a trillion dollars in tax cuts and tax cut extensions since Obama became president.

So the laws of economics have changed between now and then?

When did debt go from being bad to being good?

No response TM? :eusa_whistle:

This is so simple Dimocrats can't possibly get it right.

You're in debt, lots of debt. You got that way by spending more than you earn year in and year out and borrowing in order to pay some of that debt or create more.

So, the very first baby step on the long road to fixing this huge mess is:

A) Cut back your spending.

B) Continue your spending rate as it's been for quite some time.

C) None of the above.

It's not paper airplane science.

Can you read? The Republicans want to put the defense spending back IN the budget.

The Defense Dept is still being cu in the Republican budgett, turd, just not as much.

Welfare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Germany

Main article: Hartz_concept#Hartz_IV

The Welfare state has a long tradition in Germany dating back to the industrial revolution. Due to the pressure of the workers' movement in the late 19th century, Reichskanzler Otto von Bismarck introduced the first rudimentary state social insurance scheme. Today, the social protection of all its citizens is considered a central pillar of German national policy. 27.6 percent of Germany's GDP is channeled into an all-embracing system of health, pension, accident, longterm care and unemployment insurance, compared to 16.2 percent in the US. In addition, there are tax-financed services such as child benefits (Kindergeld, beginning at €184 per month for the first and second children, €190 for the third and €215 for each child thereafter, until they attain 25 years or receive their first professional qualification),[12] and basic provisions for those unable to work or anyone with an income below the poverty line.[13]

Since 2005, reception of full unemployment pay (60-67% of the previous net salary) has been restricted to 12 months in general and 18 months for those over 55. This is now followed by (usually much lower) Arbeitslosengeld II (ALG II) or Sozialhilfe, which is independent of previous employment (Hartz IV concept).

Under ALG II, a single person receives €379 per month plus the cost of 'adequate' housing and health insurance. ALG II can also be paid partially to supplement a low work income.
