House GOP seeks austerity - TheHill.com

Republicans and Democrats clashed Monday on what is expected to be a chief battleground of the 2012 election — the fiscal plans of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and House Republicans.

A day after voters in France and Greece toppled governments in a European backlash against austerity measures, Republicans moved forward with legislation to replace $78 billion in automatic spending cuts to defense and discretionary domestic spending with a much larger $261 billion cut focused only on domestic spending.

The GOP said its bill highlights the Democrats’ obsessions with raising taxes and inability to accept even reasonable spending cuts to a government that is $16 trillion in debt.

Austerity won't be enough to fix the damage our inept government has caused.

We need Spartanism to the third power to even begin to fix this government fuck up.

when in history has austerity brought an economy back from world wide recession?

Balanced budgets, debt reduction and economic restraint and accountability may work for individuals, but never for welfare dependent , neo-progressive vote whores......................

When has spending money you don't have brought prosperity? To anyone, ever.

Right out of the script I laid out awhile back. The Republicans don't want shared sacrifice; they want partisan sacrifice.

Their 'austerity' plan exempts their benefactors, ie., the Rich, the defense lobby, the oil lobby, etc.,

from making sacrifices. The sacrifices and belt tightening fall on Democratic constituencies.

The Depression of 1920-21, for example.

Depression of 1920

it was NOT world wide and it was a post war drop.

that is why it was so short lived

Representatives attending the 1921 Conference on Unemployment held in Washington, D.C.
President Warren Harding convened a President's Conference on Unemployment at the instigation of then Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover as a result of rising unemployment during the recession. About 300 eminent members of industry, banking and labor were called together in September 1921 to discuss the problem of unemployment. Hoover organized the economic conference and a committee on unemployment. The committee established a branch in every state having substantial unemployment, along with sub-branches in local communities and mayors' emergency committees in 31 cities. The committee contributed relief to the unemployed, and also organized collaboration between the local and federal governments. President Warren G. Harding signed the Emergency Tariff of 1921 and the Fordney–McCumber Tariff which was supported by the Republican Party and conservatives and generally opposed by the Democratic Party and liberal progressives.
