GOP leaders to skip Selma event

Native American votes were suppressed in Sound Dakota in 2014 but did Obama say a single word? Half this administration's problem is that the President is black. Apparently he thinks color is worth more than action. Obama reflects badly on black people.

"But I'm President." :confused-84:
"And?"

FYI, GOP House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is attending the Selma rally. I guess your news sources (Code Pink, Think Progress, MSNBC, Daily Kos, etc.?) didn't inform you of this?

And, humm, did you express criticism when Obama failed to attend the world leaders' march in Paris after the terrorist attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine? Not only did Obama decline to attend, but he didn't send a single high-ranking representative (such as Kerry or Biden). Were you critical of that inexplicable no-show?

By the way, here is the Republican National Committee statement on the Selma rally:

RNC Message On Anniversary of Selma March GOP

It will be curious to see if the Selma rally organizers turn the event into a political show and use it to express partisan views on race-related issues and events (Ferguson shooting, Trayvon Martin shooting, more aggressive racial-quota hiring legislation, etc.). I'm guessing that the fear that the event will be exploited for partisan purposes and race baiting is why more Republicans are not attending.

Does anyone else see the irony in this bridge still being named after a Confederate general and Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan?

Well, racist sparky, the name of the bridge - is the name of the bridge. What else would one expect in 1965 Alabama?

It's 2015. My point is you'd think by now they would have renamed it.

You actually think they would rename such a historical landmark?

Well other than not being the party that fought tooth and nail against the struggle for equality, you might have something, but you don't.just more drumming up usless BS.
Republican where there when it happened when it was needed, now the Dems rush to try and take credit for other accomplishments, typical.

Ha...nice try. The GOP's tent seems to be getting smaller. What is wrong with this picture?
Without Republicans Democrats would still have Jim Crow. So now Dimocrats want to breed hatred through a celebration of an event they caused.

Why should Republicans participate in this farce?

Obama set the example by turning his back on Israel, and refusing to send a representative to Paris to March against Islamic terrorism. Why should we participate in anything he feels is important?

His race-baiting marches.
Hands up don't shoot.

Nothing but a pack of lies.

Humm, and, to be consistent, do you also think that all public places and monuments named after Union General William T. Sherman should likewise be renamed, since Sherman was an unapologetic racist, since he opposed allowing blacks to attend West Point, since he tried to excuse white West Point cadets who assaulted a black cadet, since he waged war on civilians and then Indian women and children, etc., etc.? Just curious to see if your outrage is only directed at Confederate generals.

Wow

Pretty lame for todays Republicans to take credit for what was done 50 years ago

Don't they care?

If Republicans weren't so stupid they'd remember their history. Many black civil rights leaders were Republican.

Trying to measure the motives of historic figures with modern contemporary morality is just plain silly.

But....but.....now we have a black President who they hate....so.....

Why do rightwing racists try to taint such a politically historical event with their hate and ignorance?

Why Selma Is So Relevant Today

In 1965, Jimmie Lee Jackson was shot while taking refuge from violent state troopers in a restaurant in Selma, Alabama. His death ignited a 50-mile march from Selma to Montgomery, which galvanized the passing of the Voting Rights Act. As we reach the 50th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday," when demonstrators attempting to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge faced tear gas and clubs in the fight for true voting rights, the conversation about racial equality is as salient as ever.

Racist ignorance is far from gone - especially in the South.
