Apparently the House repubs are going to dare Obama to let the sequestration cuts take effect, just as he did with the expiration of the Bush tax cuts. Cool. The worm has turned. This will be interesting, there are plenty of democrats who won't like the big spending cuts to defense, but others who will dance with joy. Can't wait to see how this is going to pan out.

So how is their position any different this time? Didn't they have this exact same footing before New Year's? (and for almost two years prior?)

How about coming up with a plan or a proposal?

Guess we'll find out, maybe next week if they have a vote onthe proposal to extend the debt ceiling by 3 months. Obviously they won't go through with the vote if they don't have enough to pass it, which would REALLY make the GOP look even more dysfunctional.

BTW, characterizing the TPers as fools is a little over the top, these people believe in what they're doing just as much as you do.

Bad wording maybe, I meant to conveyt the opinion that the repubs have realized the debt ceiling fight was a loser for them, and sequestration and the budget/CR battles offer them a better chance to win the PR battle. Hell, they're all gutless and cowardly, but that ain't the point.

This time the spending cuts agreed to in the sequestration deal that was passed and signed will go into effect I think on March 1. Kinda like the Bush Tax Cuts expired in Jan 1 for everybody, the repubs had to pass the extension AFTER the tax rates had already reverted back to what they were before 2003. They could not accept responsibility for the higher taxes on everybody, so they took the deal that was on the table: no real spending cuts and some $630 billion in higher taxes.

This time is different cuz the sequestration spending cuts WILL go into effect, and Obama and the dems have to accept responsibility for that. The GOP is going to get their spending cuts, it just remains to be seen if it's the sequestration cuts or some other deal.

I am quite sure that are already existing plans and proposals for what to cut; The GOP had 'em flying around left and right for the last 2 years, almost had a deal on it last August until it fell apart. And I suspect the House repubs WILL pass a budget AGAIN this year like they've done for the last couple of years since they took over; but this time the Senate Dems hopefully won't get a free pass to do nothing. Boehner went on record today i think as saying that's gonna have to happen if anything is going to be done as far as appropriations go. And it's about freakin' time too.

They need to negotiate upwards from sequestration, not downwards from a "fiscal cliff." One alternative would be to suspend all COLAs pending passage of an actual budget.
