GOP Controll of US Senate: A Good Thing?

I don't quite yet know how I feel about this as a possibility.

I favored McCain, saying the two electoral branches of government don't always work so well under one party comtrol.

One legislative house split between the two major parties is not such a bad idea...but...

with the bitter partisan divide, will a split legislative branch work to the betterment of society, or one or both parties?
Nope. It is just as bad, just in different sectors of government.

I want a 95% turnover, replacing all with fiscal conservatives and strict constitutional constructionists.

That would be a good thing.

You better be thankful that they did. If they had been able to take SS money and invest in the stock market, SS would have probably gone broke.

As opposed to the financially flush operation that it is now?

Yes.

Despite what the wacky world of wingnuttery would like you to believe, SS is financially sound.

You might want to tell the rest of the world, including the Social Security Administration, that, because they don't seem to know it.

That the programs (Social Security and Medicare) will ultimately go bankrupt is clear from the trustees' reports.
Why Social Security Should Go Broke Faster - Robert J. Samuelson - Newsweek.com

Today, Social Security’s revenues each year are greater than its outlays, but as the baby-boom generation (people born between 1946 and 1964) continues to age, growth in the number of Social Security beneficiaries will accelerate, and outlays will grow substantially faster than revenues. CBO projects that outlays will first exceed revenues in 2019 and that the Social Security trust funds will be exhausted in 2049.

Annual cost will begin to exceed tax income in 2017 for the combined OASDI Trust Funds, which are projected to become exhausted and thus unable to pay scheduled benefits in full on a timely basis in 2041 under the long-range intermediate assumptions.

SS will never be bankrupt. The deficit projected for the next 75 years is less than 2%. At worst, it will pay at least 70% of the promised benefits.

And I want a PONY!!!!

Which do you think is more likely to happen?

With how pissed the electorate is right now? Throwing the bums out.

Maybe P-BO has another unicorn in his stash though for you.

What do you think the odds of all "the bums" being "thrown out" are?

I'll give you a hint - pretty low.

It's a naive fantasy. All Republicans are consumed with Global Obstruction Pathology. They exist to obstruct and when they obstruct, America loses.

The same way the Democrats obstructed Social Security reform and the judges they didnt like? Both parties do what they can to stop policies they don't agree with. Stop dishonestly pretending like only the other side does it.

That wasn't obstruction. America likes SS the way it is and opposing the judges, as has been proven recently, was a public service.

And America prefers our current health care system over Obamacare, so I guess that's not obstruction either.

The way it is now?

True but it works the same way between parties. At least that's how I always saw it.

Really? That poor phrase was coined for a sweeping vision of a government that carefully divided its power among three branches to protect its people from tyranny. Now it's degraded to cover the hope that corrupt, power-grubbing politicians will gridlock each other because the voters are too damned lazy, stupid, and gullible to choose real leaders. I find that very sad.

On that we can agree, I'm tired of voting against the worst evil, because there is no one running that will actually do the job.

Well, you can't really blame good people for not wanting to get into politics, given the way we the people have celebritized them. Instead of expecting politicians to be statesmen and leaders, we've decided they should be reality TV, just another bunch of trained monkeys dancing for our amusement. And then we wonder why we wind up with a Capitol and White House full of louse-ridden primates throwing feces at each other.

According to whom, because as I've shown you, the CBO and the Trustees of Social Security are telling a very different story. Cite your sources.

I dunno about y'all, but it looks like OUR bum is standing a good chance of being bounced on his ear. Preliminary polls are showing he might not even make it through the party primary.

Too many bums.......

Yes. And incumbents almost always win, anyway.
That remains to be seen this year. Many are 'retiring' before they're tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail it seems.

And in some cases, there are actually people coming out of the woodwork to run against them. Obama's own Senate seat (the one he vacated to be President, anyway) is in danger of changing hands.

That may be so but America also prefers a more expansive reform to the health care system we have now.
