Hispanics support big government and that's because so many Hispanics use government programs. And that is because nearly one-quarter of all Hispanics are poor in California, compared to a little over one-tenth of non-Hispanics.

The nearly continuous attack on Hispanics and immigrants by the TEA PARTY and the GOP's cavalcade of racists KNOW NOTHINGS, pretty much assured Obama a big win from that group of voters.

Attacking the DREAM ACT was a truly bad idea for the GOP, but one that, thanks to the prejudices of the GOP base, they really had almost no choice but to oppose.

The GOP made the bet that the GOP could find a winning coalition with the fiscal conservatives, the uber-religious and the overt Whites racists.

They missed by about 3,000,000 votes.

The demograpic of this nation are changing and the GOP as yet hasn't figured out how to play in this new America.


I have very little doubt that the RNC will be doing some serious soul searching about where the party is headed and who will be on board with it.

The GOP needs a helluva lot more than that. When the house gave Grover Norquist a pledge to not raise taxes a dime they sealed their fate too. Neither party has ever cut spending a goodam dime but the Democrats at least had enough sense to tax folks enough to pay for theirs. Beginning with Reagan's tax cuts for the wealthy and continuing through Bush's cuts in 2001 and 2003 the Republicans have amassed a debt so big that the annual interest on it is half a trillion dollars a year. The president's reelection even though the nation's economy is still reeling from the Bush years proves that the electorate has wised up to their rich man's bullshit. The GOP is about to become the GAP......Grand Ancient Party.

It's not just Mexicans. The president got 93% of the Black vote, 71% of the Asian vote, 73% of the Latino vote, 62% of the Youth vote, 55% of the Woman vote. The only comparative majorities for Romney was folks over 65 and White men. Republicans wake up....by 2035 Whites will be a minority in this country.

I'm not sure the GOP needs to change its position on immigration, but it does need to change its rhetoric on the issue. Too often Republicans describe illegal immigrants in harshly negative terms, when in fact most of them are decent people who went to great lengths to come here and who are only trying to improve their lives. When Republicans describe illegals as criminals who are sponging off the rest of us, it comes across as anti-Hispanic to many/most Hispanics.

Personally, I take a moderate position on illegal immigration. I would seal the border and then would allow the illegals who are already here to work legally and to have some kind of pathway to eventual citizenship. With the border virtually airtight and with existing illegals granted legal working status, I would then enforce e-verify stringently so as to discourage new illegals who would happen to slip through the border.
