Investment in Tonawanda GM plant brings new generation | The Spectrum

A multimillion dollar investment into the General Motors Powertrain Plant in Tonawanda was made public this week. GM announced that it would invest hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade the facility so it can produce the next generation engine used in Chevrolet models.

This news will breathe new life into the Tonawanda plant. This will also make it possible for workers that were let go in the past to come back. Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY), chairwoman of the House Committee on Rules, congratulated GM on its plans to upgrade.

Looks like GM is doing some good with the money we gave them - bringing 500 jobs back to WNY.

Good news..

Western New York and Buffalo really need the jobs

GM investing in a plant is socialism?

Well, as Right wingers like myself understand it.

GM is investing in a plant in the district of the head of the House Rules Committee.

GM is dependent on government largesse to survive, so from now on, they will no longer be investing on criteria like where they can find skilled labor, or where there is access to resources or materials, but from now on they will be siting their plants dependent on where the chairman of the _______ fill in the blank committee lives. If the chairman of the appropriations committee needs to point out to his constituents that he brought in 500 jobs, then GM's new factory will go there. Even if it has no other reason for being there.

It's not first time that GM reinvest in old plants.

I just hope it was a business decision, not political.

Glad to see that Zombie Motors is investing other peoples money to buy votes for a politician, well at least 500 people have jobs which is a good thing at least until we get some sane politicians in Washington that decide to pull the federal money rug out from under GM and let it die like it should have.

The Tonawanda Engine Plant was built in 1937 and has a long history of producing quality engines. Including 14 and 18 cylinder Pratt and Whitney aircraft engines used during WWII to defeat fascism and tyranny.

What's good for General Motors is good for America.

I visited that plant about 30 years ago. Good to see it get back on its feet. The area desperately needs the jobs. Let Buffalo benefit from politics for once

How and why do you make that anti intellectual leap?

I have nothing against the workers in Buffalo. More power to them. I am opposed to opportunistic politicians using their authority to coerce business into doing things to support their re election. Especially government owned business.

What we have here is a generic politician recycling taxpayer money into her election campaign. If she were a republican politician you would be among those howling loudest about this little scam. And if elections go the way things are looking right now, the shoe may very well be on the other foot. You want Republican politicians doing this? I guarantee you, they are just as venial as Democrats. They will follow this example.

No, you right wing pea brains have nothing to say about General Motors. Republicans wanted GM, Ford and Chrysler to fail. And if the 2008 elections had gone the way you right wing pea brains hoped, there wouldn't even BE a General Motors. Instead of 550 new jobs created with more to follow in Tonawanda and other AMERICAN towns and cities, the 650 remaining Tonawanda workers would have joined 4 million other Americans worker on the public dole and over 1 million retirees would have lost the retirement they EARNED. The Town of Tonawanda, Buffalo, Niagara Falls and all other surrounding municipalities would have lost tax revenue.

GM made the decision to invest nearly $500 million toward producing the next generation Ecotec engines in an AMERICAN facility, NOT Louise Slaughter.

You squeal about how important it is to keep politicians' hands off business...but I didn't hear a peep from any of you pea brains when a moronic right wing Senator demanded that the UAW renegotiate their collective bargaining agreement with HIM, right on the floor of the Senate!

Come back when you can have mommy with you, these are adult matters...

As long as GM is on government support, these kinds of questions will arise, and these kinds of abuses as well.

The damage we will take from nationalizing GM will be far greater than the damage it collapse would have been. Amtrack is a case in point.

DAMAGE??? Yea, when OUR government helps AMERICAN people keep their jobs and remain contributors to our society, it is the evil doer of unimaginable abuse, but when our government starts wars, kills human beings, tortures human beings, arrests, incarcerates and executes AMERICANS it MUST NOT be questioned...it is only doing God's work...

I don't call you right wingers pea brains for nothing...you EARN it...

You have to understand our right wing..

Helping American people is .......SOCIALISM
Starting wars in other countries is........PATRIOTISM

How is it helping the average american worker, who gets $15 to be taxed out the wazoo to support a small number of special privileged workers to get jobs that pay $60 per hour (with benefits)? A few lucky ones on the gravy train are doing very nice thank you, but the rest of us have to do with less so these other guys can get unreal wages making things one wants to buy at prices no one can afford.
