Scientists have created the ultimate GM crop: contraceptive corn. Waiving fields of maize may one day save the world from overpopulation.

The pregnancy prevention plants are the handiwork of the San Diego biotechnology company Epicyte, where researchers have discovered a rare class of human antibodies that attack sperm.

By isolating the genes that regulate the manufacture of these antibodies, and by putting them in corn plants, the company has created tiny horticultural factories that make contraceptives.

'We have a hothouse filled with corn plants that make anti-sperm antibodies,' said Epicyte president Mitch Hein.

'We have also created corn plants that make antibodies against the herpes virus, so we should be able to make a plant-based jelly that not only prevents pregnancy but also blocks the spread of sexual disease.'

Contraceptive corn is based on research on the rare condition, immune infertility, in which a woman makes antibodies that attack sperm.

'Essentially, the antibodies are attracted to surface receptors on the sperm,' said Hein. 'They latch on and make each sperm so heavy it cannot move forward. It just shakes about as if it was doing the lambada.'

Normally, biologists use bacteria to grow human proteins. However, Epicyte decided to use corn because plants have cellular structures that are much more like those of humans, making them easier to manipulate.

The company, which says it will not grow the maize near other crops, says it plans to launch clinical trials of the corn in a few months.

Male contraceptives making headway
July 24, 2011 -- U.S. researchers say developments in male contraceptives are making them safe, effective and reversible.
Previous male contraceptives were vasectomies or condoms, both unpopular choices for many men, so women were the ones who dealt with birth control, often taking the pill. "We have a number of irons in the fire," Diana L. Blithe, program director for contraceptive development for the Washington-based National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, said in a New York Times report Sunday. "I think men actually do want to do this." Some research projects are investigating ways to lower the male sperm count.

Seattle resident Steve Owens volunteered to test those methods and said it lowered his sperm count so much "I was not viably able to produce a child." However, when Owens stopped participating between tests, his sperm count went back up and he fathered a child. An October conference sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will let researchers present their findings. "Male contraception is a critical area," said Jenny Sorensen, a foundation spokeswoman. "It doesn't make sense to not include everyone in the discussion."

The most studied approach in the United States uses testosterone and progestin hormones, which signal the body to stop producing sperm, the Times said. Another approach is a birth control pill that works for men. A product called gamendazole, derived from an anti-cancer drug, prevents sperm cells from maturing, so you're "making nonfunctional sperm," said Gregory S. Kopf, associate vice chancellor for research administration at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Lawrence, Kan.

The possibilities are endless in the brave new world. Makes you wish they never cracked the genome code doesn't it?

People don't eat GM corn. Animals eat it mostly after it is processed into DDG feed that kills any bacteria or antibodies.

Phthalates in plastics is what you should be worried about as for damage to human reproduction.

Also at least 7 different weeds have now mutated to resist glyphosate weed killer. GM corn & no-till farming may end due to weed problems. This will impact food production this year & continue to drive up food prices.

That's gonna be a big surprise to the folks in Ohio.

:eusa_eh:

"General Motors filed for bankruptcy in 2009 but soon emerged from under court protection thanks to Washington's rescue. Its profit$ are now beating expectations."

Are you serious? Cause if you are you're the dumbest mother fucker here.

GMO = Genetically Modified Organism.

Go back and re-read, excuse me, READ FOR THE FIRST TIME, the article. Or print it out an have someone read it to you aloud. It has nothing to do with your Messiah Barry Soetoro.

No they just eat the cows that have eaten the GMO corn, and everything else that was made using GMO Corn to include HFCS.

GMO corn is so cheap (and so worthless) that it's actually used in dry cell batteries? Shit will f*ck you up.

ANd now Monsanto wants to sterilize us with there patented (yes it's patented) GMO corn? It's time for an Occupy Monsanto movement!

All the animals you eat have been eating GM corn for over 16 years now. In that period of time they have reproduced tens of generations deep & are reproducing just fine.

If you are having reproductive issues, you should check the phthalates in your PVC water pipes, plastic bottles, jugs, cups, plates & food wraps. Phthalates from plastic damage the human male reproductive chromosome. This will slow or stop human reproduction in a few generations.

From contaminated cows.

That is just like the story that Fox tried to pay journaists to lie about

the way I understand it, mankind has been genetically modifying food in one way or another since we invented agriculture, 10,000 years ago.

Exactly!!! Most people don't know that the orange is a hybrid of ancient cultivated origin. Oranges were not nature made. They were likely derived by splicing pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata) trees together.

Also farmers have also been using all kinds of dangerous fertilizers, weed & pest control for hundreds of years. Today they use far less & fewer harmful chemicals.

The current Monsanto is not the same company as the pre 1997 Monsanto. It is only similar in name only. All of their previous ad's & logos were terminated. Their previous business was sold off to companies like Great Lakes Chemical Corporation & the remaining business was spun off as Solutia corporation (SOA). Solutia went bankrupt in 2003 & re-emerged from bankruptsy in 2008.

DEKALB Genetics Corporation became the new Monsanto company of today. They then merged with Upjohn. Then they bought Seminis, a leading global vegetable and fruit seed company. Followed by their purchase the of major cotton seed breeder Delta and Pine Land Company. Then they bought De Ruiter Seeds.
