Egyptian opposition peacefully protests gov't policies. Jordanian opposition, mostly Islamist, does the same. These are the fruits of the Arab Spring and deserve our support. Meanwhile in Syria the Assad Regime uses helicopters to attack their own people. How the military justifies its actions defies reason. The impact of these events on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict remains to be seen. :D

I believe the Internet has changed everybody’s view of the world except for the remote Tribal areas which will eventually see how other people live and thrive...

Egypt because of its proximityt to Europe clearly is becoming a pluralistic society using the ballot box instead of guns to settle their political differences... Yes, give them credit and hope that freedom from tyrants will spread and better Economic conditions for the masses enfranchises them and peace prevails.

The Internet and cell phone service have been cut off in Syria. That can't be good.

And look at the hundreds of thousands who turned out in Cairo to protest what Morsi is doing. It appears that all the Arab Spring is leading to is for Islamists to run these countries.

It’s a natural progression Hoss. Islam was the only force to protect the poor from the ravages of despots and corruption for a millennia. As long as democracy takes hold, the masses will moderate the body politic in time to bread and butter issues.

It will run its course.

Indeed, arabs pray 5 times a day in between downloading porn on to their smartphones.

In memorable words of Ibn Al Rawandi "Islam was never a religion of tolerance and it is not tolerant by nature. Despite the way the apologists would like to depict it, Islam was spread by the sword and has been maintained by the sword throughout its history, not to mention the scourge and the cross. In truth it was the Arab empire that was spread by the sword and it is as an Arab empire that Islam is maintained to this day in the form of a religion largely invented to hold that empire together and subdue native populations. An unmitigated cultural disaster parading as God's will. Religious minorities were always second-class citizens in this empire and were only tolerated on sufferance and in abject deference to their Arab/Muslim masters; for polytheists and unbelievers there was no tolerance at all, it was conversion or death."

I have to disagree with you, Philip. When the Islamists start running these countries, I think you will see that these countries will be worse off than before.

In fact, the Islamists did nothing to "protect the poor from the ravages of despots and corruption for a millennia". Historically, when they have come to power, they have instituted reigns of terror against all that disagreed with them, rich or poor. They have cashed in on the Arab Spring, making it effectively an Islamist Spring, and it remains to be seen if they will continue their historical tradition of persecuting all who do not believe as they do.

Well then, can you post a link to these facts you speak of? Sounds like pure commentary and phobic.

There is no basis in fact for your statement that Islam protected "the poor from the ravages of despots and corruption for a millennia" but one only has to look at the persecution of infidels in Iran or Saudi Arabia to substantiate my assertion. An even more dramatic example of how fundamentalist Islam dragged a society to ruin is what happened in Spain and elsewhere when the golden age of Islam surrendered to fundamentalists.

The great thinkers of this age were highly critical of parts of the Koran and Hadith, sought to liberalize the religion, expressing the views of the very people who oppose the rising power of Islamists in the "Arab Spring", and would probably have fatwas issued against them today by Islamist societies in Egypt or Iran or Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

Yes. In most cases with the Arab Spring it's a question of who will win out & rule the people. A military dictator, an elected dictator or the rebels like Al Qaida.

I have to give Israel credit for not interfering with the Arab Spring. What right does any non Arab country have to crash their party while they continue to kill each other in their own countries?

Well perhaps a Political Science course would help you understand how Political systems evolve...I haven't heard of beheadings in Egypt over this and anyone can see that a pluralistic society is developing...most revolutions are bloody, thankfully Egypt may show a peaceful way.

Regrettably that may not be the case as Morsy's power grab and the new "constitution" may drive Egypt right back into grips of oppressive, intolerant Islamic culture. Unless the Arab World finds a way to free itself from its 8th century culture it will continue to swing back and forth from the "liberalized" version to the more fundamentalist one. Neither bodes well for the future of those people nor for their relations with the rest of the world.

Guess I'm an optimist...The history of the World is on an irreversible march towards Freedom and Democracy...Time is on the side of freedom and justice...

Egypt just issued TWO DEATH SENTENCE FARTWAHS (in the mode of Iran) upon two
AMERICAN CITIZENS for the "crime" of "blasphemy" Both of the happy recipients of the EGYPTIAN FARTWAHS are -----christian american citizens I consider this GOVERNMENTAL ACTION to be ------slightly disappointing

It looks like, Phillip, that you think differently from most Americans regarding this Arab Spring. You really should read up about what is going on in these countries to see how the Islamists are trying to run it. Do you really think the Islamists will be willing to give up any power?
