An unarmed Jewish man staying at the ALIYA Center in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn was beaten by NYPD officers early last week, though video of the event is just coming to light now.

The ALIYA Center is a synagogue and outreach center for troubled youth, according to CrownHeights.info. The man, who has been identified as Ehud Halevi, had reportedly been staying there for roughly a month without any problems. Though it was later confirmed that he had full permission to be there, a security guard was apparently shocked to find a shirtless man– who he suspected was drunk– sleeping in the center.

After he called the police and saw the beating, however, he said he regretted his decision to involve the authorities.

“I regret making the call. I should have let him sleep. It spiraled out of control,” he remarked.

It was wrong of the police to do that and they sure need to explain. I would hope some are called onto the carpet and maybe suspended for such poor judgement.

If this had been a case of police entering a Muslim place and doing this, the left would be all over it and crying 'hate crime' and demanding justice.

The police started putting their gloves on and looked as if they were preparing for this before the guy was even awake. He clearly was sleeping and not causing trouble. The guard should be held responsible for not checking into this himself and finding out the guy was staying there. Maybe the guy should have been told to go to his own room, but no more should have been done.

The guy was wrong to resist arrest, but was probably half awake and not understanding why he was being taken away when all he was doing was sleeping. He could have explained all this to a judge, but it sucks that he was being taken into custody because of an error on the part of the security guard.

Shoot first, or in this case punch first, ask questions later. That's the current state of our Police Force. It's their militarized training.
