Germany's Merkel skeptical about Obama visit - CNN.com

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- Presumptive U.S. Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama hasn't even set foot on European soil in the campaign. Yet rumors about what he might do in Germany have ruffled feathers in the German government.
Sen. Barack Obama's campaign announced last month that he plans to visit Germany.

Obama's campaign announced last month that he plans to visit Germany as part of a trip to Europe and the Middle East this summer.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has voiced great skepticism about whether it's appropriate for Obama to speak at the Brandenburg Gate if he travels to Berlin.

Merkel spokesman Thomas Steg told reporters Wednesday that it's inappropriate for candidates to campaign in Germany -- let alone at a historical landmark so full of symbolism.

Former President Ronald Reagan was at the Brandenburg Gate in 1987 when he made famous remarks to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Feet away from the Berlin Wall which divided the city, Reagan said, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Obama, however, is not the president, and some agree with Merkel that a speech at the Brandenburg Gate would not be appropriate.

"I think he should sense right now at this very moment that the Brandenburg Gate is not the place to go," said Jan Techau of the German Council on Foreign Relations. "He should opt for another place. People have suggested the [town hall] where Kennedy spoke, which is less of a symbolic place, ironically,"

Damn you're a moron. The article says nothing that would make anyone think "Germans do not want Obama in their country spreading racism and hatred for Americans," except a moron, Wuh.

Is this John McCain's view as well?

LOL, Wow strikes again.

All they didn't want was for him to speak at the Brandenburg Gate. Simply because it is in the middle of downtown Berlin and would cause one hell of a traffic back up.

Merkel made it clear that the Bradenburg gate does not represent an empty campaign back drop. It has real meaning to the German people.
Obama is out of touch with the German people and his ignorance of their heritage can create massive riots and hatred for Americans.

Obama des not understand that the Bradenburg gate represents an emotional sad chapter in Germany's history.

No, Obama is an idiot in foreign relations and he has been warned.

Really? The Germans are going to riot...that's an interesting comment. Do you think they are that stupid and childlike?

It's nothing different than if one of their pols came here and gave a political speech at the Statue of Liberty. Arrogant, sure but you really are a bit of a racist, aren't you?

So, is this John McCain's view as well?

Brandenburg Gate criticised as 'inappropriate' site for Obama speech

Angela Merkel's government has a message for U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama: We can work it out. German authorities are confident of resolving a flap over Barack Obama's visit after Merkel signaled unease over a possible Obama speech at Berlin's historic Brandenburg Gate.

While Berlin city officials are delighted with the idea, Merkel has questioned whether it's appropriate to bring a foreign election campaign to a site that symbolizes Germany's Cold War division and later reunification.
City officials say they have been contacted by Obama's Democratic campaign staff about the idea.

"There is direct contact" with Obama's campaign about his visit but "details of the program are not yet fixed," Merkel spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said Friday. "We are confident that we will reach a mutual and good solution which does justice to the interests of all involved."

The Brandenburg Gate, which once stood behind the Berlin Wall, was the backdrop for a 1987 speech in which President Ronald Reagan urged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall." The monument is also not far from the newly opened U.S. Embassy.

The Obama campaign has refused to provide specifics on his European trip. On Wednesday, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the candidate had considered several sites for a possible speech and would "choose one that makes most sense for him and his German hosts."

Not all German politicians agree with Merkel's stance. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier was quoted by the Frankfurter Rundschau daily newspaper as saying he hopes the flap does not "create an inaccurate or repellent impression" in the United States.

I saw the riots in Germany concerning Bush ending the Clinton food for oil scam in Iraq in 2003.

I'm not sure where you come up with this racism, unless you are referring to Obama choosing to be black instead of white?

Obama is totally out of touch with foreign relations and German politicians have warned him.

Germany rejects Obama

Germans do not want Obama in their country spreading racism and hatred for Americans.

REUTERS, June 20:

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama plans to give a speech at Berlin's Victory Column next week, said a German official,

Berlin is abuzz with excitement about the visit by Obama who is hugely popular in Germany and his speech could draw tens of thousands of people. Domestic media reported that big screens would be set up nearby so more people could see and hear him.

A poll published this month in Bild newspaper showed 72 percent of Germans would vote for him if they could.........

Barack Obama's planned campaign rally and speech in Berlin on Thursday is roiling the German political class, reports Der Spiegel (article in German). Authorities in Berlin are preparing for a million spectators, which would instantly make Obama's speech the biggest political event in that country since unification in 1990. There are even plans to close down the street, a mile long, and replicate the setup during the World Cup with massive projection screens.

I think he should speak in Nuremberg. Hitler managed to pull in a huge crowd of adoring Germans.

That's pretty much the difference between conservtives and these people identifying themselves neo-cons, I think.

Conservatives reckon they can win the debate on the strength of their arguments, the logic behind them, and the honest facts that support them

Neocons just make up whatever the bumper sticker headline logic that will convince the truly stupid.

Wow is troll, as far as I can tell, thus far, so I'm not sure what he's thinking.

Mostly trolls don't care about issues, they just write for effect.

As to the issue at hand?

I'm hearing that the Mayor of Berlin is a supporter of the Bushites so he is throwing up roadblocks.

I think this is another of those manufactured issues, frankly.

As I listen to the neocon outlets they're constantly reporting how upset the Obama camp is about this or that minor, often irrelevant event.

Then when I listen to the Obama camp on the issue, they're bearly interested in it.

Most politics by disinformation, innuedo and outright lies, I fear.

Some of the D partisans try the same shit on McCain, of course.

It offends me as an American in both cases.

The viagra v birth control issue, is a good example of the Dem partisan machine side trying to spin policial gold from such dross.

This idiot will start WWIII and he will be the last one to know it.

Never heard of the Blind poll?

Obama was warned about using the Brandenburg Gate as a Hollywood stage prop and he moved it.

Obama is dangerous!
He needs to go back to Chicago before he gets us all killed. :eusa_shifty:

It's good to see an american leader who can command the respect and admiration of a key ally, like Germany.

Over two hundred thousand cheering Germans came out to hear Obama's speech. Many of them waving american flags.

Damn, I missed those days when we were respected and admired by Allies.
