New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is taking a lot of heat for his move to combat obesity by banning the sale of large carbonated beverages in his city.

The latest criticism comes from Washington Post columnist George Will, who explained on Sunday’s broadcast of ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” why Bloomberg’s move represents the flaws of liberalism.

“Let me read what Michael Bloomberg said. because in one sentence he’s got the essence of contemporary liberalism — that is something preposterous and something sinister,” Will said. “Listen to this: ‘We’re not taking away anyone’s right to do things.’ Could have fooled me. “We’re simply forcing you to understand.’ Now, that’s modern liberalism — the like of bossing people around, the kind of irritable gesture.”

Stephanopoulos interrupted to point out that obesity is an epidemic. But the Washington Post columnist responded that soda consumption was already decreasing before Bloomberg’s effort.

“Of course it is,” Will said. “Regulating the sizes of these drinks at some outlets will do nothing about it. By the way, the sale of sugary, carbonated sodas has fallen 24 percent since 1998. The American people are getting the word on this. What this really says is — what Bloomberg is saying is the government helps with your health care, the government is implicated in your health, therefore we own you, therefore the government can fine-tune all of the decisions that you make pertinent to your health.”

'Forcing you to understand?' Yeah, Will sure did nail it. Very preposterous and sinister. How did the Nanny/Police Staters take control of our Country?

Man, he sure did. Once Obamacare kicks in, Big Brother will completely own the People. They will truly be enslaved. If you want the Government Freebie, you'll have to accept being Big Brother's obedient slave. Most Americans just don't understand that. All they see are the possible Enititlement Freebies. But nothing is free. You always pay, one way or another.

I had hoped that Bloomberg would dedicate his last term to giving NYC an educational system on par with best of what Il Magnifico offered during the Renaissance.

Big sodas.

Salt.

Good fucking grief

Emperor Bloomberg.

Terrified of the Teachers Union

What a world class disappointment

Yeah, he sure does suck up to them. 'World Class disappointment' is a huge understatement as far as i'm concerned.

Liberals, because the abhor freedom, want the government to have its hand in every detail of our lives.

Though I don't support Obamacare, I think you're being a tad over-dramatic when saying that once it "kicks in", "Big Brother will completely own the people".

How do you figure?

Well that is certainly true of today's 'Liberals.' But that wasn't always the case. Today's 'Liberals' are really Socialist/Progressive Nanny/Police Staters. I couldn't classify most Democrats today as 'Liberals.' Their Authority-Worshippers now. Times have changed.

Once Big Brother owns your body, you've become his obedient slave. It's the ultimate coup for Big Brother. But most Americans are enticed by the possible Entitlement Freebies. They know not what they do. Nothing is free. You always pay one way or another. And sacrificing your Freedom & Liberty for a few possible Freebies, is the ulitmate price to pay.

Now that Bloomberg has started down this slippery slope, what will he force the people to understand next?

You can't blame soda drinks for all the obesity, so this is just the start. He'll have to limit fried foods and all sweets. I know in my state, restaurants have stopped putting sugar on the tables. They have the diet sweeteners, which I won't touch, and you have to ask for real sugar.

The government has taken junk food and sodas out of the schools. Our school hasn't had carbonated sodas for 8 years, yet the obesity problem continues. The kids here that weigh the most just happen to be those on welfare. Of course, families take the government up on every freebie and there are too many programs, more than is needed. It just means that people take all that is offered and it seems to be too much. There are no restrictions on the type of food that can be bought with the EBT cards. Actually, there is no limit at all since people were using them at tattoo parlors and nail salons. Then they take advantage of other programs for the free food. On top of that, the government wants to feed kids as much as possible while at school. I think too many are over eating simply because it's offered. The government helped create a problem and are now using this to insert themselves further into our lives.

Once they are successful with a power grab, they never give it up and just want more. There will be another ban, then another................

The government will have a de facto cradle to grave health proxy.

Do you feel that's a good thing in a free society?

When I was in grade school we had to shimmy a rope to the ceiling which I think was about 300 feet above the gym floor. Need to re-institute physical fitness

Yes. Those in power, once they have the power, rarely ever give any of it up but rather become addicted to it and seek more and more of it. More importantly, if they are liberal, they will focus on the 'right and wrong' activities of people in society and seek more and more regulation of that.

The government rightfully promotes the general welfare by regulating the proper content and treatment of products that the people cannot realistically test for themselves. I don't mind full disclosure of the contents of a packaged product re salt, fat content, etc. as those of us who read labels make very good use of that. It also helps those with allergies know what products to avoid.

But when it comes down to dictating the size of a soft drink that can legally be sold, that is taking it to unacceptable extremes. What's next? The size of an ice cream sundae--limit it to the 1/2 cup serving as listed on the ice cream package? The size of a Krispy Kreme doughnut? Potato chips limited to small single servings?

Still though - Paul - "Obamacare" is not socialized medicine. There are still going to be private health insurance companies, and the great majority of people won't experience any sort of significant change at all. Really all it does (if I understand correctly), is sort of "force" people to buy insurance.

Again, I don't like the plan, but saying that it's akin to the Government "owning" your body is a over-dramatization of the actual situation before us.

Obamacare is Big Brother's ultimate coup. Once he controls your body, he controls everything. We've already seen this in Nanny/Police States in Europe. The People in Western Europe aren't free. They just think they are. Their Big Brothers control every aspect of their lives.

But they were enticed by those Entitlement Freebies. So they were more than willing to give up their Liberty for those Freebies. But they've paid dearly in the end. They're all just obedient slaves to the State now. I dont want that for our Nation. I hope the American People choose a different path. But i guess we'll see. Stay tuned.
