I wonder how it will effect Obama's re-election campaign to have gas shortages in areas that are normally strongly Democrat territory?

As gas prices rise, no relief in sight at pump

U.S. gasoline prices jumped 6% in February, and market experts predict they will climb higher because critical refining operations in the Northeast are shutting down.
As Northeastern refining capacity declines, it will force distributors in the region to buy gasoline from elsewhere, pushing up prices across the country and increasing the likelihood of price spikes, government officials and analysts warn.
"There's now going to be a question if we can get enough gasoline into the East Coast for summer," said David Greely, an energy analyst at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. The U.S. Energy Department has warned a shortfall could develop as early as July.

our number 1 national EXPORT is gasoline....

have you ever asked yourself, ''How could that be?''

WHY are oil and gasoline companies shipping our refined gasoline over seas and causing the high gas prices HERE that you speak of.....?

Many countries don't have their own refining capabilities. Some ship their oil to the US to be refined and shipped back.

who does that? I think Canada might, but not certain....? I know when keystone pipeline was in discussion, the articles i read said they wanted it refined in the USA so they could sell it and ship it overseas, not back to themselves and NOT for usa consumption? They wanted it refined and sold overseas so that they had LESS refined/gasoline here on the continent, so that THEY COULD KEEP GAS PRICES HIGHER???

Unfortunately for the RWers, most Americans aren't blaming President Obama for the price of gas. Just like when Bush was President, most blame the OIL COMPANIES (and speculators).

The "bomb Iran" assholes aren't helping either.

I'd guess because they're making more money selling overseas than they can selling domestically OR they're meeting pre-existing contract obligations. Of course, if we were to go all out increasing our supply and our refining capacity, then we wouldn't see prices skyrocket.

The rising middle class in developing countries are buying cars and using gas. All that outsourcing produced jobs and consumers there. The US is exporting more gasoline now than ever before. You could put 1000 producing wells on line tomorrow and oil still would be over $100 a barrel.

And what will it be if you don't? What will it be next year when even more refineries are offline and the algae is still floating in the pond?

How can there be a gas shortage? There is plenty of gas as long as you pay the price. Gas prices are suppose to peak in early summer which what happens nearly ever summer.

It does not help that the U.S. is going to idel nearly 750,000 BPD of refining capacity on the east coast by summer. That is refining capacity we don't have.

In other words, even if we could produce all our own oil, we don't have the concrete and mortar in the ground to turn it into diesel and gasoline.

That, due in part, to our lovely EPA and the NIMBY crowd.

Not all refineries can process all oil. Much of the sweeet crude is being exported to refineries that can only process it.

SynBit is what would come in the keystone and it would be processed at gulf coast refineries that have soured up. It sells at quite a discount to some of the sweeter crudes.

This is how there can be a gas shortage:

From New York to Philadelphia, refineries that turn oil into gasoline have been idled or shut permanently because their owners are losing money on them. Sunoco Inc. is expected to close the region's largest refinery in July, taking another 335,000 barrels per day in production capacity off the market.
The East Coast refineries are getting squeezed by the soaring cost of crude oil, the major component in gasoline. The cost of oil has jumped in the past year due to global economic growth and rising tensions between Western nations and Iran, a major producer. Refineries haven't been able to increase their own prices enough to compensate.

I wouldn't put it past oil companies to manipulate supply to influence the election.

Thank you George W for allowing imports of refined products. I'm sure those put out of work in those refineries also thank you.

High gas prices are the least of Obama's woes. The majority of "sane" Americans have figured out that he is a loon... I mean liar.

Seriously? You're going with the "Blame Bush" defense? Stone the crows, the world is populated with idiots.

Seriously? You're going to ignore the fact that it was W who changed the regs allowing refined oil products to be imported? If you want to make a point, please exclude these simple lies of omission.

Wow, conspiracy theories abound. No. They don't care about the price either way. What they had was oil and what they wanted was money. In order to make that oil into money, they need to refine it and then sell it. They are not shipping it overseas to control prices, they are shipping it because that is how you sell fuel.

Oil is sold on the international market. What did you want? Them to only sell it here? That does nothing different because supply and demand is still going to dictate the price whether or not it is sold here or on the international market. What we do have is a chance to make money refining that product here in America with American jobs. FACT: that oil is going to get refined. They are not simply going to give up because we are being idiots. The question is whether or not you want Americans to prosper with it.

This thread is silly.

There is no SHORTAGE of gas.

Prices are spiking but the supply of gas isn't down.

These spiking prices have very little to do with the supply or demand, kiddies.

If the wingnuts admit that the price of gasoline is spiking because of speculation and world prices, then they have nothing to hang on President Obama. Unfortunately, they cannot come on with that 'drill, drill, drill' nonsense when we are exporting gasoline and diesel by the tanker load. As for the refinery capacity, if we have the capacity for our own use plus exports, we have ample capacity.

So, as the wingnut continue to squack, puke, and mewl, let us ask them a simple queston. What should be done? Are you suggesting that we not allow exports of petroleum products? Are you suggesting price controls? In other words, you are recommending government action of some sort, but the you are stating that government should stay out of the way of business.

Just what is it that you want?
