Way back in the early 80's paid petitioners were legalized by an activist judge. It made for some really awful ballot measures. The worst of which, in my opinion, was the purchase of the lottery. Never saw that kind of money spent on an Oregon election before, both in gathering the signatures and the advertising to get it passed.
Of course, it wasn't the great budget panacea that its supporters said it was going to be. But the Lottery companies made out like the bandits they were.
One of the bad things from the lottery was the collapse of the dog track. People stopped betting on dogs and went elsewhere.
Now there are Indian casinos in Oregon, (the biggest casino is in Washington, it was also the first, as Lottery came to Washington first.)
Now a gambling firm has done the initiave thing again . They want to open up Oregon's first non indian casino at the site of the old dog track. I don't like this. Partly because I think it will cause more problems than it will solve, and partly just because they seem to think they can buy elections wholesale like this.
Yes on 75 signs are everywhere.
They are more of nuscence than the Ron Wyden signs.
Of course, one of their deals is that they will bring in tax dollars, (Indian Casinos are tax free of course) which will support Schools. I don't like the idea of gambling supporting schools. Schools should not have a vested interest in stupid.
